| The Jewel in
the Crown(s) |
Over the years there have in fact been three Crown public
houses. The first of which was mentioned in Mary Hardy's Diary, she writes, "Jun 19
(1795) The cliff at Sheringham against our Public House (The Crown) much damaged by a high
tide." The original Crown was taken by the might of the sea during a really fierce
storm on 22 October 1800, again Mary Hardy writes in her diary, " The Publick"
House at Lower Sheringham taken down by the sea."

|
L.R. a Sheringham resident who has kindly shared her thoughts with us says, "The
present Crown Inn is the third one, the previous one (pictured above) was much smaller and
closer to the sea wall." Apparently the front of the Crown used to be a grassed area
before it was made into a car park.

We are not too sure if the above photograph is the bar of the second or third Crown, do
you know who is the Landlord?
|
| |
The existing Crown was we believe built around 1937 and we hope to soon publish a
photograph of some of the team who worked on this. Are you one of the craftsmen who worked
on the rebuild? Do you have any information or photographs you would like to share? We
would love to hear from you. Below is The Crown at night - love the cars in the Car Park,
don't you?
