Sheringham
Annual Town Meeting
25 March 03 |
I attended the Annual Town Meeting at the Community Centre
and during the course of the evening, several points were made. I cannot list everything
that we were told on that night and can only give a resume, the full minutes are available
at the Town Council and on their web site. Points made include:
There are several allotments available for those of you who would like to 'grow your own'.
The Cemetry has had lots of work done on it including headstone repairs, decoration of the
waiting room and water extension.
The application from English Nature to fence off the Furrow (top) Common will be put
before a Public Meeting before any decision is made.
It is hoped that the rest of the Edinburgh School will be moved into their new buildings
in September 2003. The schools in Sheringham have gained a lot from this as the plans
include a full size running track, football and hockey pitches and a full size all weather
pitch was provided last year.
Sheringham Sports Association bought a lawn mower and volunteers now cut the grass, this
has saved a lot of money. There will be a fun day there on 26th May to raise more funds.
The Leisure Link Project, for the youth of this town is well under way, thanks again to
our council amongst others and trips are already planned for the Easter break, one of
which is to Hilltop.
On 15th April there will be a Well Being Day for the over 50's in North Walsham which will
include Excel 2000 and Egyptian Dancing.
There are plans for an Objective Two, regeneration meeting sometime in October - this will
be publicised nearer to the date. It was expressed that the Chamber of Trade need to
organise now if we hope to get some sort of funding.
There is a considerable amount of money available from the three charities, for those who
need financial assistance - apply to Town Council.
Don't forget the Town Council Elections in May.
From the Floor
There were many questions asked with reference to Supermarkets, the bottom line is:
Budgens are appealing and to date NO plans have been submitted for any site that Tescos
currently own. The reported 'New Community Centre' is in discussion stage only because our
Town Council had the forethought to have a clause written into their lease of the current
building stating that should the present community centre been sold commercially it MUST
be replaced.
My overall view of the evening was that our Town Councillors, who between them sit on many
committees on our behalf, are working extremely hard for the benefit of Sheringham and its
people. Sadly, the 'community' turnout was less than twenty, which if I were a councellor
might make me ask why I was bothering!

I have just been given your address by my brother, and am writing to give you some of my
memories of the Penguin Café and Sheringham. The picture shown in issue no 7 shows three
people looking out of the bedroom window they are (right to left) my mother Mrs Sarah
Francis Waters, my sister Muriel and her friend from college. This must be dated to the
early 50's as it shows the Purdy's cake shop, before that it was Mrs Holland's hat shop.
The left side of the café was the original café and the right was a sweet shop when Mum
took it over in 1945/6. There is a family joke that we never sold any sweets because we
ate the stock. Behind the row of shops were barns and smoke houses, plus one derelict
cottage, behind the barns the coalman had a stable for his horse and there was also a
blacksmiths forge. Good luck with the paper, I will try to find some photo's to send. Mr F
