| CARNIVAL YOUR
QUESTIONS ANSWERED |
WHAT IS CARNIVAL? Sheringham Carnival is a week of
activities centred around the first Wednesday in August. This year Sunday 3rd Aug to
Sunday 10th. It is for everyone to enjoy be they resident, businessperson, holidaymaker,
day-tripper. A celebration of what is so good about being associated with our lovely Town.
The events this year are to satisfy as broad a spectrum as we can from bouncing baby to
bowls, 1 day old to 100 years. We have a parade, a firework display and of course a Queen.
A very British affair but we hope for Spanish weather.
WHO ORGANISES IT? A small committee of volunteers. We have a Care Worker, Retired
Policeman, Housewife, Secretary, and Shopkeeper, In fact a cross section of our town. We
don't have a candlestick maker however
WHO PAYS FOR IT? Much of the money comes from sponsorship of the local business community
for which we are very grateful. This year we are also holding pre-carnival events a car
boot sale, a Star Wars Festival in October, a folk festival in partnership with the Little
Theatre. We also have bucket collections and hopefully people make donations when they
collect their programs. It costs in excess of £11,000 to run the event. We give any
surplus to local charities, £2500 last year.
CAN I GET INVOLVED? Yes you can and we would welcome you. We are not a secret society.
There is no club tie. You do not have to attend meetings, if you don't wish to. There is a
myriad of small jobs that can be done before, during or after the event. Please if you
would like a chat about it call Tony Nelson on 01263 823581 who will answer your
questions. As they say no rep will call, we do not send out unsolicited mail but you can
have one year's free trial offer.
I'M A HOLIDAY HOME OWNER CAN I HELP? Most definitely. It is a good way of putting
something back into the Community and meeting local people. Let's face it this is a great
place to live and you know you will be doing it permanently one day.

FLOWER POWER FOR KORTNIE
Lucky local mum, Kellie Francis received a beautiful bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day
this year, after daughter Kortnie used her 'blooming' creative talent to say 'thanks a
bunch'. |
 |
|
She used wool for her mum's hair, gold pipe cleaners to
make hoop earrings, glitter for the mouth and blusher for the cheeks! Caroline Knowles is
Manager of Norwich & Peterborough's Sheringham Branch. she said: "We wanted to
hold a competition to let children use their creative talents to show their mums just how
special they are. Kortnie's plate was wonderful. I'm really pleased that both she and her
mum are happy with their prizes." |

A really easy brain teaser for you this issue. |
How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it
doesn't hit anything, there is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws
it?

KIDS SAY THE FUNNIEST THINGS
Have you any funny stories about things your children have said?
Let us have them, we would love to hear from you. |
I took my two grandchildren on a coach trip to the 'London Eye'. On approaching the
City of London, my grandson remarked, "Why are all those men wearing suits?". My
granddaughter replied, "They are going to funerals of course!" B Downing

| After
the very amusing error by Jeremy Paxman on news night calling Tony Blair, Tony Bush, we
thought we would ask the children at Sheringham Community Primary School who they thought
the man in the picture is and if they new what his job was. Surely with his current very
high media profile of constant interviews on TV and pictures galore in the newspapers most
of the young children would have had his face engraved on their brains? Not so apparently,
this man's work is not making him an easily recognised man amongst the under 11's. More
than 70% of the children asked hadn't got a clue who this man was or what he did. One
eight year old boy thought he was "John from the Bank", another nine year old
boy thought he was "the Prime Minister of the United States". Fore children
including a six year old knew that he was "Tony Blair our Prime Minister".So, to
all of you who think that our kids are being forced by the media to grow up too soon, it's
nice to know that some events however obvious to adults really aren't making much of an
impact on them! |
| THE AWARD WINNING FLAME PLAY
VAN |
| The FLAME Play Van is a caravan that has been converted
into a hospitality unit and is towed between rural communities where there are no other
toddler groups. It aims to give parents a place to meet new friends, to provide a venue
where children can play and develop social skills they may otherwise not have the
opportunity to experience before starting school. It can also give the community a boost,
perhaps encouraging parents to start their own parent/toddler group or holiday club, or
just to be more involved with their village community. |
 |
|
The success of the Play Van has been most apparent
however, not by the numbers attending, but by the effect it has had on individual
families. |
| Parents and their families have also benefited simply by
having the neutral ground of the Play Van to enable them to make friends. These
friendships can then continue in their own homes when the Play Van moves on. Coming soon
