WAR GRAVES VISIT
On May 5th my wife and I and Brian & Glenis Wilson (Henries of Sheringham) joined a coach party to the battlefields and cemeteries of the First World War in France and Belgium.

The main reason for our visit was to find the grave of my grandfather William Nudds who lived with his wife and two small children in Beeston Road Sheringham. This we managed to do via the Internet, which told us the location of the cemetery and the exact position of his grave.

Sheringham Community Paper No one from my family had ever made the trip and my mother who is now 87 was thrilled that someone would now pay their last respects. My grandfather is buried in the Coxyde Military Cemetery which is just over the border into Belgium on the N396 towards De Panne.  This cemetery was not included in our tour but as we were such a small party (20 in total) the tour guide kindly took us there on the way to our hotel.

It is a very small, secluded cemetery, beautifully kept with trees all around. The birds were singing and it was very moving as we placed a small wreath of poppies on his grave, visited for the first time by his family since he has lain there. Killed aged 27 on July 28th 1917. We saw many such cemeteries some small, many vast with thousands of graves but all immaculately kept by the British War Graves Commission.
On the Tuesday evening we visited the town of Ypres to see the Menin Gate and hear the 8pm Last Post Ceremony. A large crowd had gathered including a contingent of the British Legion all flying their standards. We were very moved and proud as one of our party, who had been a rear gunner in the 2nd World War had been chosen to speak the immortal words 'They shall not grow old', there were tears in many eyes as he stood with his medals shining in the evening sun.

All in all a very memorable trip.
Alan Beasy.

SUMMER SEASON KICKS OFF

Yes at last the long awaited Sheringham Summer Theatre season begins. We will be giving you details of the relevant shows in each issue, beginning with:

Star Spangled Girl 1 - 5 July
This fast-moving, hilarious comedy deals with two earnest, dedicated young men who endure a life of poverty to publish a "protest" magazine in San Francisco. Sophie, the all American girl moves in next door, but soon finds that the wrong man is pressing his attentions on her. Happily this situation is reversed in time, as love and life blend delightfully in a bubbling series of funny happenings. By America's foremost comic playwright who gave us The Odd Couple and The Sunshine Boys.
Make Me A Widow 8 - 12 July
The writer Julian French is married to Vicky, who is young, spoilt and wealthy. Relations between them are tepid, to say the least, and for some time Julian has been having an affair. But when his lover suggests that Vicky should be murdered, Julian is horrified; or is he? Even more sinister are the events that follow. A tense and exciting thriller that enjoyed a long and successful run at the Comedy Theatre in London's West End.

Cast-Sam Bern, Lauren Hassan-Leslie, Will Rowbotham and Elizabeth Scott
Sheringham Community Paper Sam Bern grew up in North London and went into acting after realising he couldn't work with computers. He graduated from Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in March; and so far feels that he has made the right choice! He has been studying yoga for three years and is currently working on his scorpion! His childhood hero was Superman. He's ridden a horse but only briefly!
Lauren Hassan-Leslie has recently graduated from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. The Roles she played whilst at Webber include 'Virginia' in Saturday, Sunday, Monday and 'Anita' in A Small Family Business. Lauren has also spent much time in dance. She is looking forward to joining us for her first professional season here at the Sheringham Summer theatre. Sheringham Community Paper
