POOL SEASON ENDS

Well finally the Pool season has come to an end, it has been hard fought all the way through, and the second phase of the season produced an exciting finish to the League Championship, with one week of fixtures remaining BERNIES CLUB of Runton were four points clear of VIRGO'S (Holt) and THE CROWN (Sheringham). THE CROWN were at home to their Holt rivals and rattled up an impressive 6-2 victory, while BERNIES had to play at SOCIAL CLUB in SHERINGHAM, BERNIES lost 2-6 which meant that the CROWN were Champions by one point. The SECRETARIES SHIELD was rather more cut and dried with Sheringham's LOBSTER A winning the DIVISION comfortably. The race for second place was secured by BLAZING SADDLES (CROMER). THE CROWN won the Knockout cup final with VIRGO'S coming runners up. The Singles competition was won by the in form PAUL RIVETT of BERNIES with the equally excellent DARREN MC KNESPIEY of Crown having to settle for the runner up spot. IAN LOVE and PAUL RIVETT walked away with the DOUBLES title for the 2nd time running, while EAMONN SANDS and BRIAN SCOTT of VIRGO'S received runner up Trophies for this year. For most individual wins in a season, (21) this coveted Trophy was won by CARL WOODROW of THE CROWN who only lost 3 frames between September 2002 and May 2003. The Leagues Merit Award went to BRIAN SCOTT, many thanks to all his efforts and of course all 350 players in the League. Many thanks to WEST RUNTON SOCIAL CLUB for allowing the League to hold the finals there see you all in about three months.

Vauxhall Mallards 3rds V Sheringham 'A' team
With stand-in skipper Simon Bullimore losing the toss Sheringham were asked to take the field. Opening bowler Jez Wright took the first wicket of Wilkes for only 2 very early on and that of B. Prentice thanks to a brilliant diving catch by Mellor at short leg. Meanwhile, in-form Steve Hudson was unfortunate not to take any wickets bowling a good line and length, conceding only 5 runs from 10 overs with 8 consecutive maidens. The introduction of captain Bullimore produced 2 quick wickets, removing Sturman for a well played 20 and then Young for only a single. Ex-Norfolk captain Quorn Hanley came to the crease and played some powerful offside shots. He added a useful 46 run partnership with youngster Steven Cadge before falling to Bullimore and another good catch, this time by Neale. Spinner Bacon eventually had some reward when he took the wicket of S. Cadge for a gutsy 12. With the score on 79, Mallards were on course for a low score, but a late flurry from M. Cadge (12), J. Stone (10) and R. O'Brien (20) gave their score a bit more of a respectable look taking the final score to 136 - 9. Sheringham openers S. Walton and C. Sizeland got the team off to a good start but when Sizeland was trapped LBW by 9 year old O. Stone and W. Mellor was bowled first ball in the very next over by B. Prentice things weren't looking very bright. Jon Neale joined Walton in the middle and could only add 6 before being adjudged LBW to S. Cadge. This brought 13yr old Wes Neave to to the crease and whilst he looked very solid in defence, he was unable to pierce the Mallard defensive ring. Meanwhile, Walton was fluent playing all around the wicket and scoring freely. The game took a twist, with Neave being caught by M. Cadge off the bowling of B. Prentice, and Walton having made a creditable 37, presented a catch, this time to C. Prentice off the bowling of B. Prentice. This brought together 16yr old Jez Wright and 14yr old David King who both added quick runs to take the score from 81 to 113. King was then run-out for a well played 20 and Wright was brilliantly caught at deep Extra Cover by M. Cadge off the bowling of C. Wilkins. This quick flurry of wickets brought S. Bullimore and S. Hudson together and when Bullimore was bowled by S. Cadge, it was a matter of too little, too late for Mallards as only 6 runs were required for victory, Alun Evans with Hudson secured a well deserved victry for the lobsters. Vauxhall Mallards 3rds Innings Total 136 - 9.  Sheringham 'A' Innings Total 137 - 8.

Sheringham U13
The Sheringham U13 cricket squad invited the U13 cricket squad from Beeston Hall School to play a 34 over match at the recreation ground on Sunday 08-June-03. Captain Wes Neave having won the toss elected to bat first. Openers Ryan Sturgess and Wes Neave put on 14 for the first wicket when Sturgess chasing a wide ball, without moving his feet, edged this to the wicket keeper. James Colebrooke was next in and whilst he displayed some technique, he was bowled playing all round a straight delivery. Similarly Nathan Taylor was bowled in quick succession again playing around a straight delivery. In- coming batsman David King, together with Wes Neave repaired some of the early damage inflicted by the accurate Beeston Hall bowlers taking the score to 48 off 14 overs for the loss of 3 wickets before the game was abandoned owing to a torrential downpour. The return match at Beeston Hall School on Sunday 29th June is eagerly awaited.
