HISTORIC
LIFEBOATS RETURN HOME
|
| Two of Sheringham's historic
lifeboats have returned "home". The J.C. Madge, the town's last pulling and
sailing lifeboat and the Foresters Centenary, our first motorised lifeboat were brought
from their temporary store at Aylsham and placed in their permanent positions within The
Mo building on Sheringham's seafront on Wednesday 13 November. This site, together with
the Oddfellows Hall on Lifeboat Plain will form the new Sheringham Museum complete with
its unique collection of historic lifeboats and fishing boats. The Museum Trust's
collection of fishing boats, comprising the Windsor Rose, Enterprise, Molly Florence and
the Hoveller QJ&J were all built by local craftsmen such as Johnny Johnson and the
Emery brothers and is regarded by maritime authorities throughout the UK as a collection
of national importance. When the third lifeboat in the Museum's collection, the Manchester
Unity of Oddfellows - the first and last offshore lifeboat to serve Sheringham, is brought
to The Mo, it will be possible for the Museum to tell the story of the lifeboats, their
rescues, the brave men who crewed them and the families who supported them. |
 |
|
This, together
with the story of the fishing industry along the North Norfolk coast, will be backed by
precious archive photographs and other material which has recently been boosted by a
donation of over 350 items relating to the lifeboat and fishing heritage of the town.
Museum Curator, Peter Brooks, said, "When we asked in December 1999, for an assurance
that the floors in The Mo were |
|
 |
strong enough to take the weight of the boats we little
thought it would take two years to get an answer and a further nine months to be provided
with plans showing how the weight of the boats could be distributed over the floor. It has
been an extremely frustrating time but we are now able to plan positively for the future
and seek the necessary funding to provide a museum that will be of local, regional and
national importance." (continued on page 2)
