Tidy-up now

Garden furniture that you meant to store away last month can be put away now after making sure that everything is dry and clean. Greenhouses and conservatories used for plant growing can be cleaned and tidied during less clement weather when it is not possible to work outside. Fertilizers, composts and sprays can be replenished as needed. Trays and pots can be checked, cleaned and tidily stored. Collect all fallen leaves and make a contained pile, which can be left to rot down for up to a year and will make a very useful ingredient for composts or mulches. Exceptionally good leaves to use are those of beach and oak.

Most gardeners have quite a limited area in which to create their garden and there is no point in continuing to grow plants that are time-consuming to look after and are not pulling their weight. A diseased or worn-out shrub can be a constant reproach - do something about it. You can make better use of the space, even if it is only to dig over, enrich the soil and replant with a decent specimen of the same plant. Before the wet winter weather really sets in a last check over gutters and drains is sensible, climbers can quickly cause gutters to be blocked and the last of the autumn leaves can choke drains and pipes.
