NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL SUPPORTS VOTES AT 16 CAMPAIGN

The Liberal Democrat controlled North Norfolk District Council tonight passed policy endorsing the lowering of voting and candidacy age to 16.

Lib Dem Cllr Julie Thompson who proposed the motion, said: "16 and 17 year olds have to be mature to survive in today's world. Many people of this age get married, raise families and are expected to pay taxes, but they do not have a say in who is elected to legislate on these issues."

Cllr Simon Wright said: "It is wrong to say that everyone over 18 has the knowledge or maturity to cast their vote responsibly, just as it is wrong to say that no 16 or 17 year olds are mature enough to be given the right to vote. Given that many young people have so many important responsibilities, it is inconsistant to deny them the right to vote or stand in elections."

The council will make a written submission to the Electoral Commission Consultation titled "How Old Is Old Enough?" supporting the views expressed by the Liberal Democrat Group.
Sheringham Branch RNLI
I was delighted to attend the Service of Re-dedication & Scattering of the ashes of John Burgess MBE at the Lifeboat Station on Sunday 17th August. It was a beautiful afternoon and the service complimented the day. The Lifeboat Station is now looking really good after its major refurbishment and tributes were paid to all that had been involved in the work.

We were all treated to the sight of our Lifeboat being launched, carrying the ashes of John Burgess MBE who started out by setting up the Sheringham RNLI High Street Shop, the first in the County. He also initiated and managed the Cromer to Sheringham Raft Races for many years, an event which many of us remember with a smile on our faces for remembered antics! His ashes were scattered from the Lifeboat over the sea he loved so much.

The Salvation Army band, stalwarts of this town played the music and the congregation sang heartily. Mr Brian Pegg who has long been associated with both the RNLI and Salvation Army read the 23rd Psalm, Fisherman's version. The whole afternoon was both happy and sad, an honour to attend.

The beaches were packed with people enjoying the good weather and bathing in the sea, we should not forget that we can only do this safely because of people like the Lifeboatmen, Coastguards, Lifeguards etc. Hearty thanks to them all and keep safe.

Put a coin in a bottle and then stop the opening with a cork. How can you get the coin out of the bottle without pulling out the cork or breaking the bottle?

READERS LETTER
I used to visit my mother's step mum when I was about 6 or 7 (34 years ago), who lived in Sheringham. She lived in a cottage, I think on the road that lead to the coast road, and it had a small wooden summerhouse in the garden and an outside loo. Her name was Thirsa Nussbaum and she died about 25 years ago, can anyone tell me where the cottage is, or have any photos of it.
Thanks
