SOCIETY SUPPORTS VILLAGE HALLS.
Brownies, Scouts, playgroups, youth clubs, OAP groups and charity fund-raisers could all be under threat this year as local village halls lose Lotto-funding. Norwich and Peterborough Building Society is stepping in to help, and encouraging others to do the same. At the end of 2002 the Lotto-funded Community Fund budget was cut, which was previously a major source of capital funding for community buildings such as village halls. In addition, the Disability Discrimination Act now states that all public buildings must be accessible to disabled people by 2004, meaning even more work must be carried out on village halls which don't meet the current standard. There are over 400 village halls in Norfolk and the vast majority are in desperate need of funds. To help out, Norwich and Peterborough's branch at Sheringham is opening a special appeal account to help local halls in Beeston Regis, Aylmerton, Bodham, Gresham, Baconsthorpe and Hempstead. Staff at the branch, at 29 High Street, will be kicking off the account with £50 and members of the local community can make donations for either a specific hall, or to be shared between all six. Caroline Knowles is manager of N & P's Sheringham branch. She said ''As a regional, mutual building society, we feel it is very important to support those in our local community. Village halls play a central role in the lives of so many people in the area, old and young alike, and it would be absolutely terrible to see them forced to close due to lack of funding. I hope that our campaign opens peoples' eyes to the problems faced by the halls and that donations are made, no matter how small. Every penny will go towards keeping this traditional centre of village life'' For more information on the village halls, please contact Veronica Savage, Village Amenities Development Officer on 01953 851408.
