| BROADBAND
UPDATE |
Registrations are flying in. Register your interest for
broadband and your support will help hundreds of other local businesses and people benefit
too! Thank you to everyone who has registered their interest so far. You have helped reach
42% of the target. When we reach 500 registrations of interest, BT will upgrade the
Sheringham exchange. This will enable the much superior service to be available via your
standard BT phone socket. Over half the registrations have been made in the last 6 weeks.
You can register in a variety of ways, all are quick and easy and without obligation to
purchase.
Website: http://www.at-sheringham.co.uk
Phone. Tel 01603 502061 and Norwich based Internet service provider Paston Chase they will
register your interest for you.
Paper Form: A blue A5 form was in a previous recent edition of at-sheringham, more forms
are available from the at-sheringham office on Station Approach opposite the Tourist
Information office. Fill in the form and send it back to the at-sheringham office.
The message is spreading fast. With the new school year starting again and information
being more and more online, affordable fast internet access for learning, businesses and
home use makes sense whatever age you are! However, we still need more registrations of
interest to make this a reality, a registration of interest does not commit you in any way
to take the service. By registering now you will help hundreds of other local businesses
and people who really need the service as soon as possible. When the target is hit and the
Sheringham exchange is upgraded, the following areas will have the option to benefit from
broadband: Beeston Regis, Sheringham, Upper Sheringham and possibly West Beckham too. So
this is not just about Sheringham itself. Cromer has a similar BT broadband campaign
running too. The above broadband campaign is to enable broadband access via your BT phone
socket. But there are other possible ways to get broadband too.
The Wireless alternative. North Norfolk Broadband is a private community project, which
aims to provide broadband services to homes and businesses in Holt, Sheringham and Cromer.
A team of businesses, some with local links, have investigated the technological options
to provide broadband Internet access via a wireless based system. This involves a small
aerial being installed on your building which would communicate with other aerial based
transmitters located around the area. Interested parties (business and residential) can
register their interest in this wireless based service at www.nnbroadband.co.uk.
Registering on the website implies no commitment to take up the service as and when it is
launched, but will help the project team to understand the demand for Broadband in these
three communities and facilitate selection of the most appropriate technology.
The Satellite alternative. As well as BT and Wireless options there are satellite based
solutions available today that usually work from almost any location. They work in much
the same way as satellite TV. I.e. you need a specific Internet satellite dish installed
(your TV dish won't be suitable). There are a huge number of different types of satellite
Internet services. These vary considerably in operation, cost and performance. So it is
worth seeking professional advice before committing to this type of service. Satellite is
usually the option of last resort and is usually used where other forms of broadband are
not likely to be available.
If you need advice on any broadband Internet requirement, including satellite then contact
local provider Paston Chase on 01603 502061.
And don't forget to register for broadband, your support will help hundreds of other local
businesses and people! |

WELL DONE TO
SHERINGHAM POST OFFICE |
Dear Post-people, You and the Post Office are regular
recipients of brickbats for various 'faux pas' committed over the last few years so I
should like to start to redress the balance somewhat by publicising some quick yet
thorough detective work which took place at Sheringham sorting office over the weekend of
(Friday-Monday) 15-18th Aug. The envelope was addressed to: The Citizens Advice Bureau,
Sheringham, Norfolk. You will probably not know that, back in the late 1980's a small
committee applied for just such an establishment for our town. Insufficient funds were
available and so the organisation shown in this letter was born. Now, some fifteen years
later, we are still going strong, having added membership of advice UK & gained full
charity status. The distinctly clever thing to do (which was done so efficiently by
Sheringham sorting office) is firstly to make the giant leap from C.A.B. to S.A.C. when
there is no clue to assist you on the envelope. Once having established this connection
somebody was also alert enough to link my name to that of Sheringham Advice Centre, for
which full marks are also given. I was co-ordinator for four years, am the current Hon.
Treas. And my wife Irene served as committee chairperson for longer than that. The net
result was that the letter, only posted on Friday August 15th in the Southampton postcode
district arrived on my doormat the very next day, and a reply is being posted back today,
Monday 18th so I am very pleased to be able to say a big 'WELL DONE' to all at Sheringham
Sorting Office who had a hand in this matter. SHERINGHAM ADVICE CENTRE
