Local youngsters are being given the chance to create a
masterpiece and win a great |
| prize for Bonfire Night this year-in a competition held by
Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.
Staff at the Society's branch at 29 High Street, Sheringham, are holding a competition to
celebrate Guy Fawkes Night (Wednesday 5th November). Children up to the age of 12 are
invited to enter and the lucky winner will receive a ''Bonfire Night Rucksack'', packed
with goodies including a woolly hat, scarf, gloves and a torch-perfect for a chilly
firework display! To enter, children are invited to create a picture of anything to do
with Bonfire Night, from safety tips to colourful firework displays. They can do a
painting or drawing, or make a picture using any materials from tissue paper to tinfoil!
Entries should be handed into the branch no later than Thursday 23rd October 2003. Bonfire
Night has been celebrated for nearly 400 years dating from 5th November 1606, when Guy
Fawkes was executed after being found guilty of attempting to blow up the English
Parliament. The first bonfires were called ''bone fires'' and were set up to burn
effigies, or models, of Guy Fawkes. Caroline Knowles, manager of the Society's Sheringham
branch said:''We thought that holding this competition was a fun way to celebrate Bonfire
Night, and to give local children the chance to win a great prize. I hope we receive lots
of colourful entries to display in the branch. I'm sure it will be hard to choose a
winner'. |

Sheringham Museum Winter Social Suppers 2003/4 |
| Hello again! Hope you have all had a good summer. My good
news is that The Burlington Hotel have said that we can come and see them again on October
30th which is a Thursday. These suppers are friendly and informal and are open to all
Museum members/ Volunteers, members of Sheringham Preservation Society. Plus all your
friends or new people to the area who might like to help us in the work of the Museum at a
future date. We need to keep recruiting to share the work and our membership secretary
Sandra Gurney Tel 824820 will be pleased to hear from potential new members and to tell
you how nice we are! Our last session of suppers banked £399 (thank you for that info to
Roger Smith who does all the banking etc.) We were entertained after supper by Ken Durrant
who told us about the history of the farthing, a local quiz, a talk on the First World
War, Norwich Barbershop harmony club quartet, D' Accord, and then by our very own
Sheringham Shantymen. We are very grateful to all of these people who spent some of their
very precious time with us, thank you. The Whisky raffle was eagerly won at each supper
plus many additional prizes which members contributed-thankyou again, keep up the good
work. Thanks to Sophie and Carol who have been selling the raffle tickets. To summarise
from an organisers point of view: If you wish to attend the supper on Oct 30th, please
send a cheque made payable to Sheringham Museum Trust for £7.95 per person to Chrissy
Foster, Holly Cottage, 14A The Rise, Sheringham, NR26 8QB with your name and telephone
number and SAE if you require a receipt. Tell me if you require a vegetarian meal.

You asked for information
about Chippys. At one time the Co-op Street shop was owned by George and Ena Cook and I
believe they lived in a flat over the shop. George died many years ago but Ena was still
alive and in her 90's when I last heard from her daughter last year.
My father John Long was a part-time fireman in the 2nd World War, and I remember he went
to Norwich some nights when the city had been bombed. We lived at Longs Fish Shop now
Scotters and I remember looking at the glow in the sky towards Norwich when it had been
bombed with incendiaries. I hope these will be of help to you. Mrs E M Radley. |
| PRE-SCHOOL
MUSIC |
On Monday mornings during the
school term time the Quaker Meeting House in Sheringham is the place to be if you are
under 5! It is a pre-school group with a big difference because the focus is on music. Led
by Karen Key who teaches with the support of the Pre-school Music Association a registered
charity set up to promote music among pre-school children and their families. The group
enjoy a huge variety of songs, rhymes and games laying down firm foundation for a lifelong
love of music and musical education.
The class usually lasts for between 30 and 40 minutes where the children become more
confident in developing their musical skills while having lots of fun and making new
friends. Each half term there is a different theme around which the class is structured,
based on early learning aims and objective. By the time the children move on to school
they have experienced a wide range of different topics as well as musical ideas. Last term
the children flew on a magic carpet to visit the continent of Africa and experience the
music of a different culture as well as singing songs about elephants and lions. They
listened to African drumming before having a go themselves. This term the theme is closer
to home and focuses on an important aspect of daily life - food! Karen says that this mix
of ideas and themes helps the children both understand the world around them and develope
their imagination as they use music and drama to explore further afield.
