AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION "WINGS" TARGET SMASHED |
When Sir Colin Turner, President of the Sheringham & District RAFA set the branch
a "WINGS" Appeal target of £8000 he knew the task would not be easy. At the
branch meeting in the Southland's Hotel, Sheringham, on Tuesday September 30th, Treasurer
Des Gallagher announced a figure of £8500 as being far and away the most money raised in
any year. Chairman Derek Shrigley expressed sincere thanks to more than seventy people
whose help with a stand at the Muckleburgh Collection, collections on Cromer Pier,
Safeway's in Cromer, in the streets and house to house collections, had made it all
possible. Generous donations from the funeral services of former Chairman Don Palmer and
Membership Officer Ron Large had helped immensely. The Chairman gave particular thanks to
Dorothy and George Baker of Cromer who had dealt with the entire background organisation
for the appeal. In addition, thanks goes to 1895 [Cromer] Air Training Corps cadets who
had played their full part in the collections. Future branch events would be a Fish &
Chip supper in the West Runton Church Hall on Tuesday October 28th and the Annual Dinner
at the Southland's Hotel Sheringham on Tuesday November 25th.
Tickets for both events can be obtained from the branch secretary; Mike Norman Tel:

| FOOTIE
FROM THE PAST |
| Who are they? Yes another one of your favourite
photographs. Can you tell us who they are. |
| We believe it is a 1950s team. Give us their
names and let us know what they are up to now. |
 |
Some
of us are still alive, who were actually there.
Do they have a great temptation? When back near Sheringham Station, to shoot a line or two
about the war? Especially when we are staring, at the medal that they're wearing. The
monsoon mudded Chowringhee Star.
I'm sure they have no easy task, to answer when we dare to ask, dressed in dirty denims,
less a knife or a gun. How their big medals were so bravely won! Are we so very wrong, to
have our little fun? When nearby locals, never saw a Jap or a Hun?
Let's hope he gets the story right, at the local club or pub that night, when he tells his
tales aloud, to his avidly listening crowd, While a 'wet eyed' lady weeps, quite unaware,
she sits beside one; 'who was actually there!"
