Gardening Tips

Your fortnightly gardening tips for indoors and outdoors
Sheringham Community Paper
Fruit. Plant fruit trees and bushes, providing the soil is not too wet. Remove the netting from fruit cages to make pruning and mulching more convenient and allow birds access to bushes where they will eat overwintering insects and their eggs.

Herbaceous plants. Cut down dead stems unless you need them to feed garden birds or for the beauty that seed heads can provide in frosty weather. Retain some to dry and spray for Christmas decorations.

Amaryllis. Amaryllis are evergreen bulbs and, if still in leaf, can be watered throughout the winter, though stop feeding them. Keep in a cool, light place and they will begin to produce flower buds in spring, when they can be brought into more heat. Grow new bulbs on a sunny windowsill in a warm room- the greater the heat the faster the flower stem will grow, but avoid warm, dark places which will make the flower stem stretch and need steaking. To pot up. Use a clay pot, which will be heavier than plastic and more stable. Use a good potting compost, not bulb fibre, and avoid pots without drainage holes. When you buy them, choose firm bulbs with some thick, fleshy roots. Before potting, remove any dead roots that are shrivelled and dry. These will not grow and may rot in the pot, especially if the compost is wet and cold soon after potting. Remove any loose bulb scales. Put crocks over the drainage holes and add some compost. It is not necessary to bury the bulb and the top one third can be showing. Put the bulb in the pot and add compost around it. Water sparingly until growth starts.
Embarrassing Stories

Sheringham Community Paper

I actually got to meet the famous Robbie Williams and was full of smiles. When I visited the ladies after the show I realised I had teeth full of poppy seeds! I was mortified.
