READERS LETTER
I happened to visit Sheringham this week to see my parents and attend my godmother's funeral but while there as usual I took a walk along the prom and up the high street. I popped into Starlings as I had my son with me and it is a very good toy shop. However I happened to pick up a copy of Memories of old Sheringham and flicked through it the strange thing was that it fell open onto a page about a Mr Bullock. My maiden name being Bullock I was intrigued to see what was being said so bought a copy and took it home. When I read the story out to my parents they were equally interested as it turned out to be my grandfather who was the head gardener at Sheringham Hall during the second world war and the story was about the land girls that he was in charge of then.

My father now 88 remembers the two ladies, although he was away in the army at that time and the young lad Roy was a Roy Marling. It brought back many memories, my Father moved to Sheringham when he was 5yrs in 1920 and has lived there ever since, my mother moved there when she was 18yrs in 1938 and although I was born there as were my brothers and sister all but one brother have now moved away but return on a regular basis to visit. We all enjoyed the book and would very much like to convey our thanks to Miss Nellie Lee for bringing a little happiness to my parent's quiet life.

And thank John Lown as we found the other stories also very interesting. Many people, places and incidents suddenly came flooding back to my parents like, Fruit Cooper, Harry Mann the milkman, my Gt Uncle Jim (Preston) who also went to the Morley Club and Uncle Harry (Dyer), Mr Knights who ran the taxi after the war, The fact that Sheringham had its own gas works and water works, and that the dustcarts were horse drawn and the rubbish was taken to Cromer. My Dad was one of Mr Bullocks seven children and he ran the Sheringham Garage which now stands in a sorry old state on the roundabout. I am a mere youngster born in 1959 but have recently caught the genealogy bug and am tracing our family history and find the anecdotes of our older generations so very, very entertaining. If you could forward my thanks to Miss Nellie Lee and John Lown I would appreciate it. Many Many Thanks. Janey Valsler

'This Swallow is Flying High!

The Swallow Lodge Re-ablement Unit has celebrated it's first anniversary! It has been an exciting and successful year. Operated by Age Concern Norfolk as a six bedded unit within their Herondale short stay home at Acle, this Unit is a joint venture with Social Services with referrals accepted from the Northern, Broadland, Norwich or Southern Primary Care Trust areas.

It aims to avoid delayed discharge from hospital by providing re-ablement for people who wish to return home.

They may have suffered a stroke, illness or a fall and be unable to manage tasks as before. Although medically fit for discharge, they may need additional time to regain skills and confidence. Swallow Lodge is pleased to be able to offer them continued therapy and support to fulfil their identified wish, which 79% have indeed achieved.
