SHERINGHAM CHIP SHOPS
Dear Sirs,
I am writing to you about the article in your Issue No 24 of @ Sheringham, about chip shops. I did telephone you and say I was the daughter of Charles Bishop who had the chip shop in Wyndham Street.

It belonged to my Grandfather Robert 'Black Bob' Bishop and then my father Charles Bishop had it after him. My cousin Agnes and her husband Ledger Chinnery helped Dad at the shop and lived in the little cottage at the side of it.
Sheringham Community Paper I was born in the house next to the shop. My memories of it are that there was a tall counter and there was a hole in it where we children would ask for our chips. The fish cost 2d and the chips 1d (old pennies) We used to ask for a 'twopenny and one' There was a small restaurant at the side as well, I think. There was a big yard at the back where we played, and I remember seeing the potatoes being peeled in a big container in one of the outhouses and then cut into chips.

The shop was sold to Joe Pegg when we moved in May 1940.
I am enclosing some photos, one of Grandad and one of my Mum and Dad, my brother Bob, sister Freda and myself. I am the youngest. This one is taken in the yard of the fish shop. Until last week we had a postal strike in this area so I didn't think it wise to write then. My brother was hoping to find a picture of the shop amongst his treasures but hasn't done so yet. If by any chance he sends it to me in a day or so, I will send it on to you.

Also, my Grandfather received a certificate for bravery when he was a member of the Sheringham Lifeboat crew. It is not a very clear copy but some of the reading is: Preservation of Life from Shipwreck Resolved. That the thanks of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and £1 be presented to Mr Robert Bishop, in recognition of his praiseworthy services in wading through a heavey sea with a line and assisting to save the crew, officer, men of the Brigantine 'Alpha' of Faversham, which was wrecked off Cromer, during a strong gale from the N.N.W. on the 4th October 1883. I hope this will be useful to you for your fortnightly paper.
Yours Sincerely, Olive A Wright.
1500s FACT?
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."
Animal Crackers fund raising group would like to thank all their friends and supporters who came to the Coffee Morning at Southlands Hotel on Wednesday October 29th. The wonderful sum of £883.50 was added to the funds. Grateful thanks must go to Tony and Estelle for their kind hospitality and for allowing us to hold the event in their very comfortable rooms.
