Sheringham Community Paper
I have recently taken up the post of Police Sergeant at Sheringham having spent the last 2 years working in Cromer and Norwich. It is a bit of a homecoming for me as I have lived and worked in Sheringham for many years. My close ties with the town mean that I am fully aware of both what a wonderful place it is to live and the negative factors that adversely affect the quality of residents lives. These factors are constantly brought to my attention and I am aware that there is great concern about levels of anti-social behaviour in the town. However, as the father of two teenage girls I am kept fully informed of the views of all generations! One thing that has greatly impressed me on my return is the commitment of local Officers to high visibility foot patrols to tackle such behaviour. This is far more evident in Sheringham than in other areas in which I have worked. This, together with the CCTV, and recently introduced drinking legislation, shows that both the Police and the local Councils are forward thinking and pro-active in dealing with such issues. Another area of concern brought to my attention is speeding motorists. Holway Road is a location that has been mentioned to me on a number of occasions. Because of these comments I have instigated some speed checks in this area and they have resulted in 9 motorists being issued with Fixed Penalty Notices and a further 20 being issued with verbal warnings. The Fixed Penalty Notices carry a 'fixed penalty' of £60 and 3 penalty points. We are also utilising new legislation available to us under the Police Format 2002 to deal with those driving a motor vehicle in such a way that causes distress and annoyance to other members of the public. This could ultimately lead to offenders having their vehicles seized and having to pay hefty sums to have them returned to them. In conclusion, it's good to be back and should you wish to contact me this can be done by writing to or telephoning Sheringham Police Station on 01953 424242. I hope to submit a regular article but if anybody should wish to speak to me on a one-to-one basis I can be contacted at Sheringham Police Station. Yours sincerely. Tony TOYNTON. Police Sergeant 3031
