| NEW
YEAR, NEW DIET? |
Within a few weeks we will all be making our resolutions for another year. For many
that means a diet of some sort, short or long term, to remove a few or several excess
pounds we are carrying around. How many of us fail to keep these resolutions for more than
a few days or weeks?
As a State Registered Dietitian (SRD) I have helped many people look long and hard at
their eating patterns and tackle the weight issues amongst other nutritional issues, in a
way which does not disrupt the lifestyle of the whole family, does not mean cooking
different meals and does mean success. A successful weight loss diet is not a quick fix it
is a lifelong change.
A Dietitian is qualified to look at all aspects of diet and health. We can advise on
allergies and intolerances, look at the general nutrition provided by your diet, assess
your requirements and deal with more complex disease related nutritional needs. As a State
Registered Dietitian my colleagues and I are the only nutritional professionals permitted
to work within the N.H.S. and we have a professional organisation as well as annual
registration with the Health Professions Council permitting us to work. Generally access
is only via your Doctor or a member of the Medical team you may have involved in your
care. From 2004 I hope to be able to offer my services privatly via a base in Sheringham.
You will not need a doctors referral to see me, but a brief medical history will be
necessary at a first appointment. From 4 years in the N.H.S. and my previous catering work
I am able to offer up to date evidence based on all aspects of nutrition. For more
information and an informal discussion please contact me on 07990 642 556 and leave a name
and number where I can return your call. |

| Barry
Keith Holmes, Final Instalment |
Apart from the ordinary lessons we received there was
another side to our education. There was a building alongside the School, which taught
Woodworking and Metal work. Each boy was given the opportunity to take up either of these
crafts and the teacher who ran these classes was a Mr Sykes, a likeable man who enjoyed
his work and was at all times helpful.
Looking back I suppose we were fortunate in having the opportunity to learn a variety of
subjects. Of course all of us had the chance to better our education. Every boy could take
an examination to progress to a better standard of education. If you passed the exam you
were then offered a chance to attend North Walsham School. In this direction I should say
many boy's tried to pass but few were successful.
I would point out that apart from the usual subjects taught in the School there were
several other opportunities to take part in, for example, we had a School Football team
and another feature was every year on Empire day we all paraded in the girls playground
where we sang ''Land of Hope and Glory'' after which each one of us received an Empire Day
medal. I well remember the medal because one of the boy's, Harry Farrow always pinned his
medals, collected over the years, across his chest, he looked like Herman Goering, alas
Harry was to lose his life whilst serving in the army in the second world war. We also had
what was called Nature Walks; now and again we would be taken by a teacher through the
woods and along the beach.
Finally, I will now continue with the rest of my memories. I struggle to remember who was
in my class during my School days. I would think that it might have been Barry. I know
that Keith carried on his studies after he could have left School, he wanted to join the
Royal Air Force and at that time to join the RAF one had to take a very tough examination.
However, Keith took and passed the examination and he enlisted as what was called a
''Halton Brat'' On the outbreak of the second world war Keith joined Bomber Command and
flew several operations as a Flight Engineer receiving a D.F.M (Distinguished Flying
Medal). Freddy Duffield |
