This photograph of a Midland & Great
Northern Joint Railway train from Melton Constable to Cromer Beach, standing in Sheringham
Station. Note the imposing Station Hotel in the background. After the line was closed by
British Railways, this became the Dolphin Hotel for a while before being converted into
residential and office accommodation in which form it survives today. The train is made up
of 6-wheeled vehicles of Great Northern Railway origin, the leading one being a
"Brake Third" carriage, hauled by a Class A 4-4-0 tender locomotive originally
built by Beyer Peacock of Manchester. 15 of these engines were supplied in the period 1881
- 1888 to the Lynn & Fakenham Railway and the Eastern and Midlands Railway, both
forerunners of the M & GN, which was formed in 1893.

The engines were rebuilt at Melton Constable Works in the
years between 1896 and 1909 and it is in this rebuilt form that the engine in the picture
is shown. They were withdrawn during the 1930s, the last one surviving to be scrapped in
1941. Difficult to date precisely but definitely after 1906 (when the track layout was
altered) and almost certainly pre-World War 1, so probably in the period around 1910-1912.

On Monday 8th December 2003 a sponsored quiz consisting of
200 questions on music from the 50's to present day was held at The Crown, Sheringham.
Quiz-master Terry Phillips who compiled tapes with music relating to each question. This
would have been a mammoth task. Margery Cunningham and Christine Tew organised a raffle
with many prizes generously donated by local traders. A total of £685 was raised and will
be donated to East Anglia Air Ambulance.
Bob wishes to thank Terry and everyone involved in raising this money for such a good
cause. |
