Would like to say a big thank you to all friends and customers for their good wishes,
flowers and cards during the past month. They really cheered me up during a very miserable
time. I am now on the mend and hope to be out and about soon.
Once again, many thanks. |

Sheringham |
As Sub-Postmaster of Cromer Road and a member of the
business community it is becoming more and more apparent how our modern way of living will
ruin our beautiful old-fashioned town. I'm sure all of my pension and allowance customers
have by now heard of the new post office card account and also the options for direct
payment into those dreded bank accounts. As a result of these new changes the general
consensus is becoming clearer as time progresses that people are opting for the easier and
more convenient method of having their money paid straight into their bank account and
leaving the Post Office. Of course this change is also about freedom of people's choice
and of course is a democratic right to make the migration to a slightly easier life. My
businesses main income is from pensions and allowances and any drop in customer base will
of course have a direct effect on my own economic state. In simpler words for every
customer choosing the bank account payment I lose £7.45 per customer a year. Up until
migration I had a substantial pensions and allowance transaction base, it does not take a
mathematician to work out how much of an effect this is having on my salary and also for
all rural Sub-Postmasters nation-wide.
How much longer can we hold out before our salaries are so low that we will be forced
financially to close down our rural sub-post offices that are so needed and are part and
the heart of your community. Please think long and hard when you are making your choice on
how important to your town and your rural Sub-Post Office means to you. I would also like
to mirror this attitude and make people aware right now, while they still have the choice
to an even more daunting aspect of our collective towns businesses. The shadow of choice
and convenience is still hanging over us. TESCOS. This threat in modern thinking and
modern shopping is directly the same as what is happening with Post Offices and modern
facilities. Let's ask ourselves why we live in Sheringham, why we moved here from wherever
we came from, because for me I found a way of life and that way of life is Sheringham way
of life, old Norfolk way of life. A tradition to be proud of, a tradition that brings in
hundreds and hundreds of people each year, simply because we've got what they haven't and
this town needs saving.
I've lived here for ten years and I've fallen in love with the place, I love the shops, I
love the fact that when I walk down the street the majority of people know me and speak
and I'm sure for the majority of the community the same goes for them and isn't that great
that we live in an environment where we can feel so comfortable. Convenience and an easier
life where you can obtain all the wonderful things that we can get in our town already
under one glass encrusted roof will destroy everything that this town has got to offer. It
does not take an opinion poll for me to say whether what I'm saying is correct, because I
am already seeing it, indirectly from human attitude. If this supermarket arrives in this
town our wonderful established businesses will struggle, if not collapse. This is a stark
voice of my experience from the private that I am in already. I would like to say to the
'72%' please reconsider exactly what you have opted for.
