REVIEW - Tim Jefferson |
White Heat. The band
are all experienced musicians but have only been together for six months. The bandleader
described their stuff as 'Classic Rock' and so it was: Free, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top etc.
Raunchy Gibson sound (famous guitar maker), female bass, yes that's right girls. She was
good too. Its very unusual to come across a bass player who uses fingers alone (no
plectrum). She played the most unusual bass I've ever seen, a Marenello, Italian. Reminded
me of a Shectar (another famous make). They played with passion but need a bit more time
together. With the use of radio miked (microphoned) guitar and vocals, the lead singer
went around the pub and brought the audience into things with great success. They're
planning to play at a bike festival in Lincolnshire. They're not totally cover and I heard
a very good song of theirs; 'Hooked on you'. A band to see and watch out for. Well done.
Hy Tide. I saw Hy Tide at The Crown and The King's Head in
Letheringsett. These boys are good. Ask yourself, 'What do you want from a pub band?' The
answer is here - they're strictly a cover number band. What makes the difference between
one band playing other people's songs and another band doing the same thing set me
thinking. What makes Hy Tide stand out is their sheer fun and energy. They love it. Let's
face it, if the band doesn't then neither will I. Their choice of material is excellent.
Getting a pub audience to dance is no mean achievement. I was invited to one of
their rehearsals; they are the only band I've ever seen that sets up its whole rig
(amplifiers, speakers, microphones etc) for rehearsals on a winter's night. Its called
commitment. The interplay between the two guitars is intelligent and produces a good
thick rhythm section at the front end of the group. Tight drumming and good interplay
between good clean bass and the drums creates a successful combination and the front man
has a great voice and rapport with the audience. The band area in The King's Head
was packed and just for a change everyone was dancing. They are so confident and enjoy it
so much that the feel they produce means nothing else matters. (I might add that it's hard
to convince musicians that this is true). I'm much the same. The atmosphere was
great; it was a really good night.
Razor Sharp. This band enjoys a good local reputation. It's
deserved. The pub was very empty, another Winter's night on a Sunday, very bleak. This
didn't stop the band from giving their best. They're fun and interaction with the audience
proved it. Three part vocal harmonies (three different notes at the same time), lovely
clean guitars (sometimes distortion is used to hide a lack of ability but not here), very
little dropping the tempo (unintentional changes in speed) and a bright and lively gig
list (songs selected). The pub filled later and I enjoyed the gig. The band's been around
since '95 and I look forward to hearing the new songs in the pipeline. They're strictly
cover (other people's songs). Well done. |

| READERS LETTER |
PHANTOM VISITOR of NORTH STREET.
After reading the article on dog poo in issue 33, I felt I had to write and say that the
residents of North Street also have a very large visitor every day, leaving its poo on the
pavement. (Perhaps it's the same one).
At the last count there were 5 large deposits, you know who you are. Do the decent thing
and Pick it up. We shall seek you out.
