WOMEN OF DISTINCTION
Floral display at St Andrews, Sheringham Thirty three women of distinction were to be found in St. Andrew`s Methodist Church, Sheringham, at the beginning of July, they spanned all ages of history from Cleopatra who was born in 69BC to Ellen Macarthur who became famous in 2001. All were depicted in Flower Designs by flower arrangers from the church and friends from the local area. The Designers for the Flower Festival, Mecki Green & Sheila King covered a wide range of women who had made various achievements, including Elizabeth Fry, Florence Nightingale, Margaret Thatcher, Amy Johnson, Emmeline Pankhurst, Mother Teresa, Mary the Mother of Jesus and many more. Depicted in the pulpit was Sarah Mallet, one of John Wesley`s first women preachers.  The Festival which ran for four days, also had a variety of stalls, which were very popular with the visitors, as was the Cafeteria which provided lunches, teas and refreshments throughout every day.  A rota of organists provided light background music to enhance the enjoyment of those sitting to look at the displays.  An important part of the Festival was the worship, with a Communion service on the Friday morning and on the Sunday, Rev. David East led morning worship and an evening Festival Praise in which the hymns were all chosen by members of the church. The packed congregations sitting amongst all the flowers!   On the Monday, the flower displays were dismantled and the flowers were taken to housebound and unwell members and friends.  The total raised by the Festival this year (to date) is £9,914, which is towards the everyday running expenses of the church and its outreach work, and a donation to be given to the Kelling Hospital Ambulance Appeal.  We wish to thank all who visited and all who helped the Festival.  For those who have a computer (or know someone who has) a CD of the Women of Distinction flower arrangements and text is available, price £5, from R. West, 19 The Avenue, Sheringham. NR26 8DG

Date for next year`s Flower Festival is 7th. -10th. July 2005.
