Sheringham Community Paper Dougal's Pet Corner

The place for your pet stories and pictures, let me have them
"Ring, Ring", "Ring, Ring", my helpline is very busy this time of year. With baby hoglets coming out of the woodwork, hedgehogs being injured by cars and strimmers, sick and blind hogs found wandering aimlessly during the day and getting fly strike, vets' needing advice on hog care and maintenance, just some of the problems I get over the 'phone every day. Calls (and emails) come from all over, Ireland, Germany, France, and Scotland and of course the majority here on mainland England.

A few weeks ago I wrote a report on the dangers that hedgehogs face during the summer months; which was in your newspaper. Two people, who had read that article, saw hedgehogs in their garden out during the day, they rang immediately and two hogs were rescued by their prompt action. I have also had calls from your area for advice leaflets to be sent.   Remember that if you do find a baby hoglet orphaned; please have a good hunt around the area, as siblings may also be in danger close by.  Thanks for caring, Carol Chittock.  Hedgehog Helpline 01379 644988
WHEELIE BINS
Wheelie bins are coming to town and to help with the filth and stench they will leave in their wake a little idea sprang to mind.  Pressure washing!

We currently run Pro- Valet Auto care and Chore Busters and hope to commence with the wheelie bin cleaning service as soon as the things arrive in the town and surrounding areas. I just thought it worth our while to sound out the local community preliminarily to gage interest and gather any thoughts on the matter.

If you would like more information or have any suggestion please call (01263) 824766. We will be advertising in the @ Sheringham in the autumn when according to the council we are to have our bins.

Sheringham Community Paper The weather was fine for the 15 people and 2 dogs that took part in our “Sponsored Walk” who all enjoyed the barbeque back at Stephanie’s afterwards.
Once the sponsor money is collected, Jane, the organiser, believes we will have raised over £400 for the cats.  Two of our supporters, Jill and Gill had a stall at a recent Craft Fayre at Wolterton Hall and raised £110 for the cats.

The “kitten season” started later than usual this year due to the cold weather in January and February. Our first kittens arrived in April and were soon chosen and in their new homes. They have continued to arrive at regular intervals ever since. At the present time we have 14 kittens in residence of which 3 are waiting to join their new families. There are also at least a further 25 kittens waiting to join us as soon as we have suitable vacancies for them.

The kittens in care include Jezebel, a timid black girl and Harvey, a ginger and white boy, recently caught on the waste disposal site just outside North Walsham. These kittens have had very little contact with people prior to joining us but they are already responding to lots of tender loving care and regular meals. We know there is at least one other kitten to be caught plus two adult females (who will be neutered and returned to the site). The young man who alerted us to the problem advised us that the adult cats had been dumped.

Paisley, has now left us for a new home and Maestro has also been chosen, although he will not be leaving us until early August. Lucy the tortie has also been booked and will leave once she is fully fit and neutered.

Also waiting for new homes are:

Rags, is another really pretty fluffy black/white girl. She is only 9 months old and joined us together with her three kittens. She had been abandoned and was living in a burnt out chalet at Hemsby. The kittens that have all now left us for new homes were found within a stud wall in the house. Rags is very affectionate and loves to play. She deserves a good home after such a bad start in life.

Vicky is a shy little ginger and white girl. Vicky is only 14 weeks old and joined us from the Bacton Gas Site together with her two sisters and brother (all ginger and white. Sisters Rosie and Cassy have already left for new homes and brother Macavity has been booked. We are hoping that she too will be chosen before Macavity leaves.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten, call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalshamcats.co.uk for a description of the cats before giving her a call.
