Faith - The Crown
This band is from Norwich and is a 4 piece, female vocalist, guitar, bass and drums. Their
style is contemporary/melodic rock with a few old ones from the last thirty years thrown
in and they did some of their own too.
They had some interesting gear, always fun for me to notice. The first time I saw Faith,
they had their balance wrong but played with precision and spirit. The singer was back
with the band for the first time in some months and I think they were giving her some
support. The overall sound edged towards distortion, crowding the three vocals. I think
they deserved better and I enjoyed what they played.
Sometimes all three vocals were used at the same time, which was nice to see. They did
"Death of an Alien" by Jo Satriani (an amazing Guitarist of world renown) which
worked well and showed how good the Guitarist is. The Drummer is a joker he changed hats
for every song. My favourites were the chicken and the immense top hat with an eye-patch.
But there I'm afraid the praise ends. The audience just didn't take to it. Why? This is a
difficult question to answer. As you know, one of the few things I've never done is to
play in a cover number band.
I think I've worked out that the following things have to be in place:
1. Correct choice of material (mainstream danceable Rock mostly in "The Crown")
2. Interaction with the audience
3. Tight playing
4. Balance (not as essential as the others). So how did they fare? They got the balance
right the last time I saw them (the guitar being maybe a little too quiet) and they were
tight but too many slow numbers and generally the wrong material for the pub were
responsible for the poor response.
To put it bluntly, if this band played 'more well' known danceable Rock, then they'd have
this place jumping. Their material was good listening; especially the Alanis Morissette
and they're a nice bunch. They do a lot of gigs and I suggest you see them.
Other pubs have given them good feedback, so you can't please everybody. What is
interesting is that they're recording their own material for an album, one song of which I
heard and it was good. I'd like to hear the rest.

| Caravans
Not a Threat |
The North Norfolk coast between Sheringham
and Cromer has a large number of caravans and mobile homes parked on it but they are
neither in danger from or responsible for coastal erosion.
I met with Brian Farrow, Coast Protection Engineer for this stretch of coast and he
explained the causes of erosion to the cliffs. Coastal erosion is caused by natural
elements like wind, rain, frost and, of course, the sea; all of these can have an impact
on the rate of erosion. It is no more dangerous for caravans than for ramblers, dog
walkers, or holidaymakers. Where caravan sites can have an impact on erosion is by people
not using signed footpaths, trying to climb the cliffs and, if the caravans have
soakaways, drainages which increases the ground water content. Once the cliffs are gone,
they are gone forever they cannot be rebuilt. As for danger to caravan sites, cliff falls
usually occur in the winter months when the sites are empty and, with the proper safety
zones observed, they are in no danger. Cliff slides are more common and that is when some
sections of the cliff slip down. Brian spent 15 years in the Coast Guard Service and
never once saw anyone die from a fall from the cliffs, broken legs and arms are more
common injuries.
What we must also remember is that the cliffs are sites of considerable interest in
terms of the flora and fauna which inhabit them and their geological and biological
content.
Brian finished by saying that caravans are a necessary part of the economy of North
Norfolk and vital to the region.
