Re: Parking in Sheringham. In the light of the
councils brilliant strategy of installing even more double yellow lines in
Sheringham (West Cliff being one of the locations) to reduce the already inadequate local
parking facilities even further, I am writing to highlight a problem.
We have recently acquired a large motor home and are awaiting a permanent space becoming
available at a site in East Runton where it will be parked when not in use. In the
meantime, as we are unable to park it in West Cliff due to the restricted width of the
roadway, we park the vehicle in the nearest wide road where it will not cause an
obstruction to traffic. For a short time we have been parking the vehicle in The
Boulevard. We have been visited by the local police and been telephoned by local
councillors as they have received a complaint from a resident of the Boulevard on the
basis that our van spoils their view of the street. The Highways Department have
apparently also been approached with the same complaint. The police have confirmed that
the vehicle is taxed, roadworthy and legal in all respects and, as a result, we are
entitled to park on the highway. It is simply one of the features of living in Sheringham
that parking is very limited, particularly if you are not fortunate enough to have a
garage or driveway parking at your home. The situation really is first
come, first served. I have lost count of the number of occasions that I have
not been able to park anywhere near my house, let alone outside, after taking the car out
of town. Some of the cars that park outside my window are there for a week or more as the
owners turn out to be holiday visitors who are staying in the vicinity who have decided to
park their cars near the beach for the duration of their stay.
We would not think of complaining as we accept the local situation for what it is. Unless
the council respond to the wishes of the majority of the local residents who would like to
see a residents parking permit scheme introduced, the problem can only get worse. It is
good to adopt a policy of live and let live in Sheringham- there
simply is not one special law for some of the residents, however well established or
connected they are. Has anyone encountered similar problems? M Johnston |
