CAMERA CLUB |
| In the words of the song: 'It's been a long, long time,
from May to September'; but now, kind readers, it's here at last. Yes, it's the new
Camera Club season. As I mentioned last month it is really intended, with your help, to
make a new and more eventful Club to represent North Norfolk, in Holt. Again the venue is
the Holt Community Centre, but by changing our meeting evenings, to alternate Wednesdays,
we are able to use the much more intimate Lounge Room. Comfortable seating will be
arranged to suit the event of the night, So, even if you are not an active photographer,
but enjoy the subject, come along and join us. Subscriptions have been reduced;
particularly to encourage the passive partners of members, who can themselves compete in
the Club competitions. The first meeting is on Wednesday, September 15th which will
be an informal evening which we have called 'A SUMMER REMINISCENCE'. This is a time
when we welcome new members, and meet again with old friends. Bring some summer
photographs and enjoy a glass of wine, while you discuss those balmy sunny days earlier
this year. Yes; I know I went somewhere different to you! See you at the Club, please do
come along. On Wednesday, September 29th our new Chairman, and excellent
photographer, Brian Singleton ARPS will be shewing photographs and letting us hear some of
his experiences, during his walk for charity from coast to coast right across Great
Britain. Brian will share this adventure with us. Both the above evenings, start at
our regular time of 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. The Holt Community Centre is nearby to Budgens'
Supermarket, with easy car parking. During August over a dozen members enjoyed a
warm and sunny day at Banham Zoo and, despite the limitations of seeing some of the larger
animals in cages for members who have been on wildlife safari's, it provided a pleasant
get together arranged by member John Humberstone. Photographic activities do take
place during the summer months, of course. We are pleased to say that Reg Tizard was
awarded a third place, and two highly commended awards, for the Midlands and Cockney
Trophies in the 2004 DPS Annual Exhibition, held recently. Prints will be on display at
Queen Mary's College in Basingstoke during September, if you happen to be in that
area. R.J.T. |
| Progress on
the new Maritime Craft Centre. |
Shortly after the Spring Newsletter was distributed, work
to refurbish the old fishing sheds was started. Thanks to some good weather during May the
work is now ahead of schedule and is due for completion in October this year. The asbestos
roof was found to be of the non- toxic variety, so the builders were allowed to remove it
without involving any special equipment or techniques. The render has been stripped from
the seaward side of the buildings but the flintwork is of poor quality so it will be
rerendered. This time, however, it will be done properly with lime mortar and not cement.
Internally the cobbled floors had to be removed to comply with Health and Safety
Regulations and will be replaced with a wooden floor. A small section of the original
cobblestone floor will be relaid and visitors will be able to view it through a glass
panel set in the floor. Also to comply with current regulations, the upper floor had to be
removed, but the magnificent old oak beams that held it in place will now be used in the
roof. At the moment, of course, the area looks a bit like a bomb site but that is all set
to change. Soon the roof will be on and the windows and doors in place and you will be
able to appreciate what a marvellous building it will be.
