In this crucial game for the
lobsters, Downham A visited the recreation ground where Sheringham were looking scramble
into a safe position up the league after a disapointing losing draw the week before
against bottom side Norwich A. Sheringham won the toss and chose to bowl on an
indifferent wicket. Early chances were missed by the lobsters and this allowed the opening
pair ofA Stuart and M Ferrari to motor the score along to 52 inside the first ten overs.
The partnership ceased with the score on 66 as wicket keeper Wynton took a good catch from
Smith to remove Stuart for 26. This bought big hitting Martin to the middle who bashed the
ball to all parts of the ground as quickly as possible with the consistent Ferrari
striking the ball well at the opposite end. Martin crashed his way to 35 before a terrible
mix-up for the visitors saw him run out. This wicket was followed with another as Bond was
deceived by J Mckensie and Sheringham once again had a confidence burst. However Ferrari
continued to play well and reached his 50 with some neat strokes. Another partnership was
built between he and Corbett who added 72 for the fourth wicket with Ferrari taking the
main stand. Corbett played well for 26 until Smith had him dismissed to end up with
figures of 2-63. With the score on 194, Sheringham were staring at a large total to chase
as Downham still had 11 more overs. Ferrari began to free his arms and reached a very good
100 with a crashing drive. Gormett offered good support for 12 before a brilliant catch
from Wynton saw him depart. The bowler, Mckensie finishing with very respectable figures
of 2-56. Ferrari was eventually run out for 122 as the innings petered out with good
bowling at the death to restrict the visitors to 251 for 6 from 46 overs.
Sheringham began very positively with O Smith and especially C Wright playing some fine
strokes. This was the start the lobsters needed and the pair kept the score ticking over
with good running and powerful play, Wright in particular looking in good form. The
partnership ran to 86 when Smith was beaten by Lewis for a solid 22. Graver looked in good
touch and partnered Wright well until playing a loose shot and being caught off Lewis who
bowled well taking 2-57. Blackiston was soon bowled by spinner J Stuart as Wright
searched for a partner. He found this in New Zealander J Mckensie who helped Wright along
to 50 and also played some good strokes of his own as the pair began to motor along.
Wright then began to play exceptional strokes and soon moved into the nineties. Mckenise
offered good support in a fine partnership worth 65 as Wright passed the 100 mark,
crowning a fine innings. Sheringham required 226 for a 90 percent draw and with the score
on 180 with 8 overs left, this was the aim for the lobsters. Mckensie was then bowled by
Ferrari for 30 and captain Mckean came and moved the score past 200 before he was
needlessly run out for 10. Wright continued to strike the ball well however wickets were
being lost as A King was then run out for 5. However, a good supporting role by J McAdam
saw Sheringham ease past 226, ending up on 230 for 6. Wright ended up on 119 not out and
played a blinding innings which was well appreciated. A good result for the lobsters as
they earned 13 points from an improbable position. |
