REVIEW - Tim Jefferson |
Sheringham Folk Festival down by "The Crown", a
few months ago. I first observed that there were few people to witness the start of this
event. This was a shame because events like this can bring in good trade to the town. 'The
Keel Band' kicked off and like most acts played several times during the event. For me
there was a lack of demonstrative passion here, although the musicianship was faultless.
Talking to the famous Hughie Jones (former Spinner) later that day, I realised that
passion on stage was what separates the professional from the amateur. There were problems
with his microphone and the P.A. was inadequate for those at the side and for outdoor use.
This aside the atmosphere was jolly and the weather windy but beautiful. Every so often we
heard Norfolk dialect from 'Uncle Charlie Aylott'. This was full of dry Norfolk humour and
went down well. 'Malarky' are a local group and play traditional folk tunes with two
vocals and a tin whistle. Clean and simple. We had dancing too from our own 'Lobster
Potties' and another Morris group. There were many artists on stage: Ebekneezer; Liam
Dolan; Lee Westell; Emma Williamson; Kevin Green; Pat. Macauley; The Ugly Dog Skiffle
Combo; Fiddlesticks; Brian Nobs; Denise Brown and Johnny Brown.
The evening proved interesting. The event shifted to St. Andrew's Church, a good venue
with a fine stage. I was shocked and unbelievably embarrassed to see an audience of eleven
turn up to see The Skylarks, Lisa Redford, Red Oktober and Hughie Jones. What the hell's
going on? Television can be videoed, Sheringham is out of the way and is lucky to attract
artists to the area, I could go on...but I won't. If Sheringham wants artistic events to
happen, it must support all events or they will disappear. I'm wasting my time of course
but it's about time somebody rang the bell. If you local artists starve each other of
audiences, no one wins. So many of you that I know should have been there. I was there and
I don't even follow folk music.
The Skylarks are a father and daughter with an accordion player. The girl on the violin is
so good. She improvises perfectly and even sings at the same time. It won't be long before
she's snapped up by a big name. The violin and accordion did a piece of immense beauty.
THIS IS A LOCAL GROUP. Next on was Lisa Redford who is a singer songwriter. Her stuff is
beautiful and I bought her album. She already enjoys T.V., Radio and National acclaim AND
YOU MISSED IT.Red Oktober, who I've reviewed before, gave us a set and produced some
lovely melted music. THIS IS A LOCAL GROUP. Finally we had the animated, hilarious and
captivating Hughie Jones of Spinner fame and what a nice guy he was. All good stuff AND
YOU MISSED HIM! By now I hope some of you have got the message because a lot of people
have given everything to put this event together. I have given my time to review this for
you. It was a good weekend. Finally I saw The Castaways on Sunday who produce lovely
songs with a thick sound. Impressive. There's a lot of talent all around us. Let's
celebrate it. I did that weekend. |

| JAZZING IT UP
FOR BREAK |
Following the success of their Jazz concert last year, the
music department at Greshams school will be staging another Jazz concert this January,
supporting locally-based charity BREAK. The event will take place at the Auden Theatre,
Greshams near Holt on Sunday 16th January at 6.00pm and will feature three bands and other
accompaniments from some of Norfolks brightest and most talented young musicians.
This wonderful evening will feature a range of jazz, blues, big band and Film themes
so there will be something for everyone to enjoy. The evening will start with the
first group of musicians, aged 14 years old and under, who will actually be performing
their first ever concert. These will be followed by the Midnight Howlers, the second of
the groups aged 15-16 years old. And the third and final band, Zydeco Strand (the oldest
group of 17-18 year olds) will provide the last final performance of the evening.
Along with this there may also be a number of individual items, including a very talented
solo saxophonist to accompany this musical extravaganza. All the money raised from this
evening will to go to BREAK, providing funding towards holidays this coming year for
children with disabilities at BREAKs two local holiday centres in Sheringham and
Hunstanton, so they can have a chance to enjoy the seaside we are fortunate to enjoy all
year round. What a better way to leave the winter blues behind and lift your spirits for
the New Year? Tickets are £8.00 and are available from the Auden Theatre Box Office on

Wheelie
Bins
Now that we have the long awaited wheelie bins in Sheringham, I would like to
give users a warning. when you are putting items into your bins, make sure that the lid is
open far enough and does not drop down onto you or the wind catch it. It will give you a
nasty bump.
