Dougal's Pet Corner
The place for your pet stories and pictures, let me have them |
| Of the 16 different types of bat that live and breed in
Britain, only 13 have been recorded from Norfolk in the past 50 years. |
 |
| Their secretive nocturnal habits and hidden
daytime roosting sites coupled with the fact that they spend almost half the year
hibernating makes them a difficult group of animals to study. Bats and their roosts are
fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. There is still an enormous
amount to learn about the habits and distribution of these understudied and misunderstood
animals and everyone is encouraged to help with this task by reporting any found or seen,
and to encourage the conservation of known roosting sites.
The Norfolk group aims to provide a running survey to monitor the county's bats by
individual and collective observation. We aim to help educate the public about bats and
their harmless and interesting habits and to help with the checking and running of bat box
schemes. An occasional newsletter called "Norfolk Natterer" is produced.
Anyone with an interest in bats may join this informal group, further details from the
county co-ordinator: John Goldsmith. Norfolk Bat Group, C/o Natural History
Department, Castle Museum, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 3JU. john.golds@paston.co.uk |

Dear Editor
I absolutely love your paper, it is always packed full of interesting articles and the
humour is wonderful. I agree with many of the opinions expressed, especially those about
the youngsters of our town. There are many that deserve praise. I would not like to be a
teenager nowadays a they seem to be the forgotten generation in many small towns. Don't
knock them for being on the streets unless you can give them a viable alternative. There
is nothing in Sheringham for them to do and nowhere for them to meet with their friends.
They need somewhere to call their own, so come on regeneration, make our young generation
a priority. Janet |

We are sorry to have to start the New Year with some sad
news. 19 years old Tucker became ill over Christmas and had to be put to sleep. He is now
at peace under his favourite resting place, a bush in Sharons garden where he spent
so much of his time. |
We do however have some very good news.
Twiggy, the frail black cat has been given a new home. Her new owner has advised Stephanie
that she has settled in very well and is even venturing outside. With lots of tender
loving care she may surprise us all and recover her strength and live for quite some time.
Harvey and Minnie, the two timid kittens have also left for a new home together and they
too have settled in well. We are also delighted to advise you that Neo, the ex circus cat,
has also been chosen and will be leaving us shortly. We will all miss him, as he was such
a character.
Although Stephanie was hoping for a quiet time at Christmas, this was not to be as 4 cats
arrived on Christmas Eve. These included Pippy, a thirteen years old ginger and white girl
mentioned in previous articles who had not settled in her new home and had been waiting
for some time for a pen to become free. Her new owner had persevered for several months to
see if she would settle but it was decided that the best option would be for her to come
back. We are therefore delighted that Pippy has already been chosen and will be leaving us
soon. If you are looking for a cat or kitten, call Stephanie on 01692 535858.Alternatively
you can visit www.northwalshamcats.co.uk
for a description of the cats before giving her a call. At present we have two pairs
of older kittens looking for new homes. Fido and Rogue are approximately 4 months old and
Chester and Vienna 6 months. These beautiful kittens need special homes as it has taken
some time for them to learn to trust us. Their new families will need to give them extra
time to adjust to their new situations and not expect them to be lap cats to
begin with. We have no other kittens available at present.
