READERS LETTER What dramatic changes we have seen in our Country and elsewhere in the
last 30 years. In our youth we were expected to be obedient to our elders. If we were
caught trespassing or doing even the slightest damage, we were sent to court, we did not
want to bring disgrace on our parents. We had very little money, but we went to the
pictures for 3d old money. We could not afford to go to hairdressers. We often had our
hair cut by the local town barber. When I worked at the school helping with the school
dinners, all the food was beautifully cooked, children got second helpings, all the food
was fresh and good. Now the young girls are not taught by their parents how to cook a
proper meal. We learnt from our mothers and we then taught our children. Now any rubbish
will do, so long as they dont have to prepare it. What bad health they are storing
up. They prefer spending money on flashy hairstyles and cheap jewellery. There is very
little respect for teachers, Police and the law. Sex is the norm and early pregnancies
accepted. Religion is mocked. People have become much wealthier and selfishness
predominates. We had very little, but what we did have we appreciated and the world was a
far nicer place. HIP HIP HORATIO Hip-Hip-Horatio is a clever and light-hearted piece about
Nelson, from his childhood in Norfolk to his heroic death. (It was published in 1975, and
lasts about half an hour). The words are Michael Bloms, and the music is by Michael
Hurd. It tells the story of Nelsons life. Set within a present-day frame of
visitors to London looking up at Nelsons Column in Trafalgar Square. The music
reflects many moods cockney knees-up, exaggerated oratorio, cool jazz and whimsical
folk music. There is a calypso, a Viennese waltz, a blues number, a gentle pastoral idyll
and a chaotic, clashing battle scene. All the musical styles are employed to make
Nelsons life and times come alive for us. It is enjoyable to sing and to hear, as
the melodies are infectious! OUR FISH GO TO SPAIN In response to the announcement by EU Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers that the European Agency for Fishery Control is to be based in Vigo, Spain, North Norfolk Conservative Candidate Iain Dale comments: It is outrageous that the body thats supposed to police our fishing grounds is being given to Spain. Spains fishermen are devastating our seas. It was revealed recently that Spanish fishermen recently used illegal drift nets and discarded 65% of fish caught. The Common Fisheries Policy has been a disaster for the environment and for our fishermen. Its a classic case of where Brussels has too much power. The real mystery is why Mr Blair agreed to the deal in the first place and why he wants to give the EU more control over our lives in a host of other areas. Iain Dale is on 07768 254690 |
