Rotary Celebrates 100 years

On February 23rd 2005,165 Rotarians from North Norfolk gathered at the North Walsham Community Centre to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of Rotary International. Members from Aylsham, Cromer and Sheringham, North Norfolk, Reepham and North Walsham Rotary clubs joining together to commemorate that historic meeting which was to launch the worldwide service organisation whose motto is “Service above Self”.

Rotary celebrates 100 years

It was the brainchild of Chicago lawyer, Paul Harris, who wishing to foster the friendly village spirit in which he had grown up in the city, invited three business associates to join him for a meeting. As the fellowship flourished the membership grew, and it was the habit of rotating the meeting around the offices of the members which gave birth to the name – Rotary.

One hundred years on Rotary International is still active and vibrant today in communities worldwide, represented by 1.22 million members in 166 countries. President Derrick Hankin of the Rotary Club of North Walsham says “I feel privileged to join with fellow Rotarians to celebrate this momentous occasion. Rotary continues to flourish and helps to address the needs of both local and international communities.”

Full details of the work that Rotary undertakes in the community can be found at www.nwrconline.org.uk

When cooking cabbage, put a little fresh lemon juice in the water with it - this will stop the cooking smells from spreading, without affecting the taste of the vegetable. Or, add a slice of stale bread, it takes away the smell and can be skimmed off the surface easily afterwards.

Sheringham County Ward Changes.

The Boundry Committee for England have completed the Review of Norfolk County Councils Electoral Arrangements. Initialy 55 of the 84 Divisions, each covered by a single Councillor, had a variation of more than 10 % more electors. and 25 Divisions varied by 20 % more electors.  The object of the current exercise is to ensure an approximate number of Electors to Each Ward Councillor. The Present Sheringham County Ward consists of Sheringham, Beeston Regis, West and East Runton and Aylmerton. The new Sheringham Ward will consist of only Sheringham and Beeston Regis Ward. Aylmerton,West & East Runton will now form part of the Holt Ward which includes Holt, High Heath, East Beckham, Gresham, Mallark, Sustead, upper Sheringham and West Beckham Wards.   The initial Proposals in 2003 split Sheringham in two by putting Sheringham South Ward with Holt Division and Sheringham North Ward with the Runtons and other County Wards.    This would have been a complete disaster for Sheringham, fortunately with the help of the Lib/Democrats of County Hall, Representations were presented and a more Positive outcome for Sheringham has prevailed.  Sadly, this is not such a good outcome for the Runtons, who would benefit by still remaining with the Council division rather than a Country one.  B H.

Smoke detectors.

Most people die in fires due to asphyxiation from smoke rather than from the flames. Fit smoke detectors to give you an early warning of a fire.
