Town Council News

Sheringham's new Town Guide is printed and now available, free of charge, at various outlets, including the Town Council office. Many thanks to those who contributed and worked hard to produce this splendid publication. The Town Council's Town Guide Group hopes to compile a list of events for the year, in effect a 'What's On', to be included as a Separate list inserted into the new Guide. Any organisation or group with events they would like listed please write to the Town Council, Town Hall, Church Street, Sheringham, - envelope to be marked @Town Guide' - by 1st Mat 2005.  The Annual Town Meeting, organised by the Town Council, and held on 22nd March 2005, was reasonably well attended with the new format introducing input from two organisations in the town i.e. Sheringham Regeneration and Sheringham in Bloom, both of which gave updates on their activities, hopes and achievements.  A new Council year starts on 3rd May with the Annual Council Meeting during which the appointment of Town Mayor, Deputy Town Mayor, various Committees and working Parties, Members with Special Responsibility, and those who represent the Town Council on a variety of groups and organisations are agreed.   Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside the control of Norfolk County Council the footpath cleaning in the Town Centre did not take place, as I am sure you will have noticed, but it is hoped to have work underway before too long.  Cherry Ashton - Town Clerk

Copy of letter sent to Town Council

The Town Council have asked us to return the grant of £2500 awarded to us for the 2004 Christmas Lights.  We have spent it. The manner in which we have spent it is recorded in the accounts we sent you so we are at a loss to understand why your councillor had the temerity to ask for it all back as reported recently in the EDP. It was not made clear in the article that the grant was for 2004. I actually completed and signed the application for the grant and it was certainly not for 2005 lights.  The entrepreneurship of the Christmas Lights Sub Committee, under the leadership of Mr. Tony Nelson, ensured that, with sponsorship and donations from various bodies, his excellent committee raised over £3000 extra. This money does not belong to the Town Council. It is ring fenced for us to give to the organisation that takes on the Christmas Lights for 2005. We have already made that clear to you.  So far as we are concerned there was a legal contract between us. There was an offer from us that was accepted by you and the consideration to seal the contract was the grant. We have put the lights up and taken them down and fulfilled our obligations to you and as far as we are concerned that is the end of the matter.  We think that it is about time representatives from the Town Council and our governors met to discuss the problems you have caused us, for example, the article in the EDP recently about the Christmas Lights grant and your refusal to allow us to use the top common for park and ride this year.  Thanks to the interference from the Town Council we have lost several members from the Carnival Committee. Some were offended by the aforementioned article. As I write, it is quite possible that there will be no carnival next year.
John Ashton - Sheringham Carnival Chairman.
