Kelling Probus Club

On the Queen's birthday, Thursday the 21st April, at the Pheasant Hotel, Kelling, some 34 members enjoyed a very tasty and traditional lunch of Grilled Cumberland Sausage followed by Apple and Blackberry (possibly picked on Kelling Heath!) Pie.   More was to follow because Mr Patrick Monaghan, gave an excellent talk about his life and a Life of Crime. In giving his talk Patrick donned on the appropriate uniform, he missed out the military wear having been in the Army for 30 years. But he donned on the morning coat, topper and gloves and looking very dapper when he spoke about his nine years he spent as the Clerk to Sir Aubrey Melford Stephenson, a very senior High Court Judge. He was involved with the Kray twins trial as well as representing Ruth Ellis in her trial. Among the many tales which, Patrick told was one IRA trial where it took some 410 jurors to be interviewed before a jury was agreed by all parties.  When his judge friend retired, Patrick moved to Norfolk, where he had previously been in the High Court on many occasions. He became Clerk to the Court in Kings Lynn and of course attired himself with the necktie and wig. He had many stories to tell of his 5 years there and later when he moved to Norwich court. Although he spoke for nearly an hour, all members found his talk most entertaining and Vic Lee in giving a vote of thanks on behalf of the members found himself reminiscing about the occasions he had been in court, as a visitor, of course! Patrick received great applause for his excellent talk, which was full of anecdotes.   Mr Norman Barnes the Chairman handled the other business reminding members that on the next meeting, Thursday 19th May that Graham Fearn, will be talking about 'Lighthouses'.  The aim of Probus is to create good friendship. If you would like to find out more about our luncheon meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month then do give John Jennings our Secretary a call to gain more information on 01263 740716. We welcome new members, so give John a call.  Philip Hutchinson.

READERS LETTER

Dear Editor,  Years ago, when Wells was much more a working coastal town, with fishermen and other related trades, the pubs in the town, such as The Shipwrights on East Quay, were regularly host to nights of music, song and step dancing. Old songs mixed with the playing of dulcimers, accordions and the like, whilst men and women tried to outdo each other with step dancing on the pubs' tiled floors, or even tables!  I would be very keen to hear from anyone who remembers this old music making in the area; the musicians, dancers, songs and places where it happened.
