Response to Readers Letter on Page 4
I have no problem at all in both printing your letter in full and responding to the queries in it. I will, in this article tell you who we are and I will answer honestly the points you have raised, in the order they were posed.

Norfolka2z has been established in Sheringham for three years, both Bob and myself are local people. I personally lived outside of Norfolk for some time but regularly returned to visit family in Sheringham and kept abreast of what was happening in the town. From the beginning we have been involved in advertising and marketing. We began our Community Web Site two and a half years ago, and as we promised the sponsors at the time, we only have enough advertisers to cover the costs of running it. The whole idea of the site is to promote Sheringham and we have 2 - 3,000 visitors to it each month.

Why do we feel that Sheringham needs a cloned version of the Sheringham Independent?

We don't. Several people approached us in 2001, who asked if we had ever thought of developing a local paper that could have a different outlook to the current one and cover various topics from an alternative standpoint.

Sheringham Community Paper

After several months of deliberation, asking questions around town and looking at other local town's papers we decided that it was a viable idea. As this type of project was new to us, we approached Ineke, whom we knew from her days at the Independent and asked for her help and advice. She had left the Independent for various reasons including poor health way back in January so was no longer involved with them in any way and luckily for us she was happy to help us to get established. Her help and advice has been invaluable, she continues to help us out voluntarily at her surgeries on a Monday at the Little Theatre. Since starting out we have also been lucky in receiving voluntary help from Terry & Jacky, who help us to type up letters and articles and will also be putting each

issue on-line over the next few weeks. As to being a clone of the Sheringham Independent, We are no more a clone than the Nationals like The Sun, Star and Mirror, apart from the size of the paper, most of the content within it is very different. We are trying to appeal to all age ranges, from the very young to the very old. We have asked all organisations not to send us copy if it is going into the Sheringham Independent, the people of Sheringham do not need to read the same information twice, but inevitably there will be some occasions where repeat articles will happen.

How many letters are genuine?

All letters that have 'Name & Address Supplied' at the bottom are from genuine people, who do not wish to have their names published, but are happy for us to give it out to anyone who enquires. 'Name withheld' are from people who do not wish their names to be given out. We will not publish letters, which we receive that do not have a name on them, but if the writer requests that we keep their name out of the paper we will do so. For this we make no excuses.

In our first couple of issues there were letters from people who were aware that a new paper was being started. You would be surprised how many people want to write a letter but cannot put their words onto paper. Stephen, a young man who is with us two days a week until he leaves school goes out with a Dictaphone and takes down their stories or letters, comes back to the office and types them up, then returns to the person for their signature. We had been asking local business to advertise so word of a new paper got around, in this town, as you know, the grapevine works at the speed of light.

Our name or nothing endorses articles written by the staff of the paper, we do not write letters. Our Hear'Say' column is written by a local businessperson under the pseudonym of 'Vic' and a dog does not write Dougal's column, but yes you guessed one of the staff. If we hear of something going on in town, we are not going to wait for someone to write us a letter, we are going to investigate and print it ourselves.

How are both papers going to survive?

If the examples of Cromer, Holt and Fakenham are anything to go by, then the survival of two papers should not be an issue. We have not produced @ Sheringham with any intention of trying to close down The Sheringham Independent as has been suggested, indeed there is no reason why this should happen.

Competition is healthy, it ensures better quality and it gives local businesses a choice of affordable advertising. Let's face it, if Sheringham can sustain more than one Butcher, Baker, Builder, Electrical Shop, Travel Agent, Newsagent, Flower Shop, Greengrocer, Pub, Club, etc then it can also cope with more than one paper! As we are an established company, our paper has less overheads that have to be covered by advertisers, therefore we will be able to ensure that there is always enough room for letters, news and reports.
