Sheringham Community Paper Sports News

This is your column for news about any sport you are interested in.

On the back of an opening day defeat to Beccles A, Sheringham were looking to bounce back against Downham Town, and did so in fantastic fashion, with a remendous 6 wicket victory. After winning the toss, captain Jez Wright asked the opposition to bat first, and on a good wicket, seemed to be the wrong decision. After a tight and cagey opening to the match, Downham's batsmen soon made their intentions clear, with Ferrari especially striking the ball very sweetly. He and Morton opened the innings with an 85 stand before Wright vitally removed Ferrari, caught and bowled for 52. The steady Morton was then joined by Gromett, who both punished poor Sheringham bowling, dispatching a lot of loose bowling to the enclosed boundaries. The partnership took Downham to 197 for 2, as Morton fell 6 short of a century, bowled by Smith. This was to be the only reward for the lobsters in the field, as Gromett (81) and Bond (15) rounded off the innings, totting up an improbable run chase, the innings closing on 268 for 2. With a disgruntled Sheringham taking to the crease, they had to pick themselves up and play their way back into the game, and C Wright showed his intentions straight from the off, hitting a good boundary, before being bowled by Legge in the second over. D King also followed the same route and Sheringham were in a lot of bother at 23 for 2. However, following their superb partnership against Mattishall, M Spillett and J Wright were at it again, and both played some intelligent cricket. With Wright especially fired up, he played a superb captains innings, completely taking Legge, who had looked dangerous early on, apart smashing anything short to the boundary. He and Spillett carried Sheringham hand in hand, marching them towards the target. The runs continued to flow for the Lobsters, as Wright passed his fifty, however both needed to stay at the crease, each being in tremendous form. Wright battled brilliantly to round off his century, hitting a single to attract rapturous applause from his team mates. He continued to battle hard, and so did Spillett, as he reached 51 before edging to the wicket keeper, ending a superb 174 run partnership. A King then entered the arena, to join Wright needing 72 more runs for victory. Wright continued to look in great form, as he edged Sheringham closer and closer, and was eventually dismissed for a breathtaking 146 by Legge, a match winning innings if ever there was one. It was left to Garrard and King to knock off the winning runs to see Sheringham home with 4 overs still remaining, taking an absolutely brilliant 6 wicket win.

EAST COAST WARRIORS

East Coast Warriors F.C. have just held a very successful presentation evening, awarding not only individual awards, but also trophies won during the year.   Our new Under-11 side is now being formed. We already have around the maximum number of boys and girls that we are allowed to sign on and we are expecting them to be very successful in next year's competitions.
As a club, we have managed to raise funds from, not only local businesses and organisations, but also from organisations across Norfolk.  But, we intend to have a yearly tour for the U-11 side, either somewhere in GB or on the Continent. Next year we have decided to take the children to Holland on a 4-day tour, including at least one tournament.  We intend to raise money in and around the town over the next year, some exclusively for the tour, but also enough to guarantee a future for youngsters who wish to join our club. We have very strict rules on the behaviour of the children and we are proud of the way they behave on our travels and that they will represent Sheringham in a very positive manner, while still managing to have a great time, in Holland.
Some of our children come from quite deprived families, but we intend to make it possible for everyone who wants to go to get their ticket. If people and businesses who read this letter and feel that they can assist us in achieving our aims, could they either write to me, care of the Community Centre, Cromer Road, Sheringham, or ask Melanie how they can get in touch. We will be happy to show you how the club is run and how children are crying out to join us and have fun as well as coaching and competition. We are taking children for our other teams from the age of five and six for coaching, and seven- eight- and nine-year-olds for our organised teams.  Yours faithfully, John Humphrey
