BAND REVIEWS by Tim Jefferson Serious Hat Band This band has been around for thirteen years and is now London based. They do pop rock and very good it is too. They finished their first set with a delightful David Gray number. It was all energetic and danceable stuff and they had so much enthusiasm. The audience took time to get on the move but once they did they stayed that way. Two interesting things I noticed were firstly the intelligent gig list, many I couldn't identify and secondly the immensely tight and artistically correct drummer. I've always said (and I mean this as a compliment) that you don't notice good drummers or bass players in a tight band. Their abilities and contribution dawned on me slowly. The use of acoustic guitar was courageous. With a three-piece band you run the risk of sounding thin when you're in a pub gig but it worked. The use of multi-textured electric guitar sounds completed the picture. It was well done. Their roadie (loving known as Rock Jon, who moves and sets up gear and equipment) played some numbers with the band adding a harder rock edge to proceedings. Interacting well with the audience finished things off. They've done albums of their own stuff and have demo CDs available. They mostly do events (Cowes Week for example) and not so many pubs. I quietly felt we were lucky to be seeing them. Check out their web-site: www.hatband.co.uk CAMERA CLUB The only official event in July is the informal visit to Pensthorpe
Wildfowl Park which takes place on Wednesday 20th July. You may arrive with your friends
at any time during the morning and we hope to meet up for lunch in the Park Restaurant, at
approximately one o'clock for those who have not been to this venue before the
opportunities for bird photography are great, so do bring a tripod. SHERINGHAM EVENING W.I. When our planned speaker was hospitalised 24 hours before he was due at
our June meeting, President Marian Clark swiftly put 'Plan B' into operation, and
persuaded some of the members to share their experiences with us. We were lucky to
have at the meeting Cynthia Groves, a member from Hertfordshire, visiting her
sister-in-law, a Sheringham member, who was able to speak about her own Institute and her
interest in a variety of crafts. Margaret Roffe spoke of her experiences, often amusing,
as manager of a Charity Shop. Maureen Cook told of the time she had met Cliff Richard when
he came to switch on the Christmas lights in the Borough of Greenwich, causing envy among
some members of a 'certain age'! Debra Cooke, a comparative newcomer to Sheringham, told
us of how she had first become a member in Hertfordshire as the result of taking part in a
Carnival Float, and how members' husbands there had secretly formed a choir to entertain
the Institute ladies as a surprise. Celia Dolton explained the results of her research
into the reason for the WI movement having adopted ' Jerusalem' as our anthem.
Members who were able to catch up with news of friends appreciated the extended
refreshment time. An altogether relaxing and enjoyable meeting was had by all, and we
shall hopefully be able to re-book the speaker for a future date.
SHERINGHAM AND CROMER LADIES CIRCLE Sheringham and Cromer Ladies Circle would like to thank the local people who gave generously helping us to raise enough money for a paramedic suit for the Air Ambulance. Many people supported us by buying tickets rom our chocolate raffle outside Whistlestop in Sheringham, a tombola outside Video Vision in Cromer and stalls at Sheringham and Cromer Christmas lights.
