Congratulations and well done to all those involved in organising
Sheringham Carnival this year. I have taken part in Sheringham Carnival since I was a
nipper and I have to say that this year was the best yet. It was a wonderful idea to have
the floats form up along Station Approach, Carnival goers at last had a place where they
could walk along and view the floats before the parade with ease. Thank goodness we no
longer have to trek up to the Common. There was many a year when our months of hard work
were ruined on the Common, with rain turning it into a bog and our float getting damaged
either going on or off, worse still our costumes got covered in mud and slush. Not many
people used to bother coming up there to look as it was too far out, which was a shame for
the little ones who always make such an effort with their fancy dress costumes. It was
also good to see some of the old faithfuls entering this year, The Dunstable and
Sheringham Social Club, I do hope they do it again next year.
With everything centred on the town itself and using the Main Car Park we felt we were
always in the heart of the Carnival and surrounded by good old fashioned entertainment.
Let's face it, to close the roads and car park to motorists for just one day a year isn't
that much to ask. Maybe after seeing the success of this year's Carnival, the Town Council
will allow the Common to be used as a Car Park next year, which would alleviate much of
the problem and allow even more people to enjoy it. With so many small town Carnivals
disappearing it is really good to see that Sheringham is going from strength to strength.
The Carnival is a big part of our town's history and it is something for all ages to
enjoy, long may it continue.
Roll on next year, we already know what our float is going to be!
