CRICKET

After a long string of awful results, Sheringham finally bought some life back to their season with a very good winning draw at Pinebanks against Norwich Union.   After again being to put into bat, Sheringham opening pair Spillett and C Wright began cautiously, with some good positive strokes to boot. Again, after seeing his opening partner back in the hutch, Spillett was joined by a confident and extremely pumped up Carl Tuckett, who looked in a buoyed mood right from the off-set. Anything loose was soon dispatched to the boundary, and the score moved swiftly along as the lobsters looked to built a healthy first innings lead. Spillett was bowled by Hussain for 18, and this bought Walton and Tuckett together, the pair sharing a decent stand of 58, both players looking in good knick off the back of fifties from both the week before. With shots all round the wicket, the Norwich Union bowling was suffering as a consequence and at 23 overs, Sheringham were 94 for 2. After scoring 24 useful runs, Walton was also bowled by Hussain; however Tuckett was going from strength to strength, dominating in his next two stands with J Wright (7) and A King (8). The West Indian continued to launch into the opposition bowling, and passed a sublime hundred, despite Wright and King both caught in the field. D King then came to join in the fun in the middle, as Tuckett smashed all and everything for runs. King added 9 in another fine stand of 58, where Tuckett smashed 3 magnificent sixes to go with his already fine array of runs as the lobsters finished up with a formidable 232 for 5, Carl Tuckett registering exactly 150 not out. With the extreme frustration of not winning a game for 5 weeks, Sheringham sensed it was an ideal chance to get things back on track. Although the opposition possessed a reasonably strong batting line up, the lobsters knew that good bowling and more importantly sharp fielding would see them get at least a winning draw. Right from the start, openers Aspin and Kennedy found the going tough against J Wright and Smith, who both bowled good lengths. Aspin was removed by Wright for 1 in a fiery spell of bowling, and soon after Smith got his rewards thanks to another good catch behind the stumps by Chris Wright and Norwich Union were in serious trouble at 28 for 2. A Hussain and M Bunn looked to attempt to try and get the hosts back on track, and a few forceful shots from Hussain saw the run-rate upped slightly, however another wicket for Wright (2-33) saw Hussain back in the pavilion for 25. Although a minor onslaught from Bunn saw Norwich Union approach the 100 mark, it was thanks to the accurate spin bowling of David and Andy King who helped the lobsters remove the pair in quick time, as Clitheroe (14) was first bowled round his legs by David King and then Andy King had Bunn plum lbw and with it the chances of a home side victory. Stearman (19) hit a few lusty blows that passed the boundary before D King (3-41) had him well caught by Walton, and Dalvi was trapped lbw by the young spinner to give him his third wicket. In an attempt to push the last few wickets, Sheringham pressed hard but the defence from Ramakrishnan and Eastick kept them out, Ramakrishnan (41) beginning playing a few shots to move the home team past 150 to gain another batting point. However, the home team ended disappointingly; as Sheringham settled for a great winning draw with the hosts falling 61 runs short of the lobster’s total, as Sheringham gained 19 very well earned and needed points.

NORTH NORFOLK CAMERA CLUB

A NEW SEASON STARTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!
Close bosom friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run.
JohnKeats wrote like that, obviously after a good summer. All we can hope for this year is a splendid autumn. And one of the pleasures of our local weather is that we may be lucky yet. Keep cameras at the ready!

READERS EMAIL

In Issue 52 you printed a readers email asking for info about the children’s home.  There was a National Children’s Home in hooks hill road in the 50’s-60’s.  All of the children attended sheringham county primary school (subsequently demolished and now a retirement home complex), which I attended 1958-1964.  I can remember a couple of children from the home.  Kevin’s friend may also like to register at this school on the Friend’s Reunited website as a number of people from the 50’s are listed. Good Luck, Debbie Graham, Birmingham
