SHERINGHAM LIFEBOAT DAY

I spent a most interesting few hours at the Lifeboat Station Open Day in Sheringham. There were displays inside the boat house which all seemed to be doing well, and the tea/coffee shop was doing brisk business due to the inclement weather conditions. Still, it stayed dry for most of the activities outside. The Coastguards started off the proceedings with a guard being lowered down the cliffs to rescue a volunteer victim at the bottom. The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows was then launched into a quite heavy sea, the water reaching the top of the tractor unit engine before the lifeboat was able to race off its cradle. It then performed some practice scenarios including retrieving men from the water, before being collected by the tractor once again and being returned to shore.

Then the fun began. A challenge was issued for the public to have a race to see how quickly they could don the lifeboat men's outfits, and give the large number of visitors a laugh into the bargain. There were two sets of adults and two of children. Needless to say, the smallest gave the most laughs, young George and Jack (Jack's the littlest one) set about the task with the help of some of the men pouring them into the suits, George and Co. finishing the task in one minute 40 seconds, with Jack a few seconds later. They were second only to two experienced lifeboat men, who completed the task in one minute and 10 seconds. But Jack and George certainly won the moral race and were the popular winners. As you can see, they both made a stunning pair of lifeboat men. The activities carried on into the afternoon, with music from the Shantymen CDs and a kayak rescue by the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and Cromer's inshore lifeboat to finish off the day. Judging by what I could see, it's not the boats, but the coastguards and the lifeboat men who are the heroes, risking their lives for the sake of humanity 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.

Sheringham Carnival

I would just like to say how wonderful the carnival was. My family and myself found the procession FANTASTIC, with my three-year-old daughter taken back by the whole event.  She even asked if she could see it all again the following day.

While standing amongst the crowds, there was such praise for all those people who put in so much effort with their costumes and floats who made the whole event a memorable one. It will certainly bring back those crowds and many more next year. The whole atmosphere was amazing, everyone walking through the streets were in such high spirits. It's nice to see everyone out and about celebrating our towns Carnival. We can't until next years.
