THIN LIZZY LEGEND UNVEILED

Phil Lynott's mother, Philomena and the Lord Mayor, Councillor Catherine Byrne, unveiled the bronze life-sized statue of Phil, frontman of Thin Lizzy on Friday 19th August on the corner of Grafton Street, Dublin to commemorate his life and achievements. Phil died aged 36 in 1986 after years of drug addiction.

One of our readers, Fran Wade, of The Heron in Peterborough was a guest of Philomena, for the unveiling and concert, she said, "The crowd started singing 'The Boys are back in Town' when Gary Moore and Philomena arrived." She added, "I was honoured to be invited to this event, and the atmosphere was electrifying"

Thin Lizzy, formed by Lynott, songwriter, lead singer and bassist, broke into the charts with a rock version of a traditional Irish folk tune, 'Whiskey in the Jar'. The groups' most successful album was the 1976 Jailbreak, reaching the Top 10 in Britain.
The following night, Saturday 20th August, would have been his 56th birthday and a tribute concert took place at The Point Theatre, featuring former band-mates Gary Moore, Eric Bell, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and Brush Shiels. They played, Parisienne Walkways, Don't Say A Word, Jailbreak, Boys are Back in Town, Whiskey In The Jar, as well as Happy Birthday to You.

NELSON - A NORFOLK HERO

With all the current interest in Nelson, with Trafalgar celebrations coming up towards the end of October, here is an opportunity to learn more about the man and his momentous times. A Day School, organised by the W.E.A. in Sheringham, on Saturday 8th October, allows us to consider the phenomenon of his enduring appeal. We shall examine his career, looking at the significance of his great victories and those aspects of his character which contributed to the making of the Nelson legend. His Norfolk background and connections will be of particular interest.

Tutor for this Day School is Charles Lewis, author of the recent book "Nelson: I am myself a Norfolk man". Charles lectures regularly on Nelson and associated topics and is advisor to the Norfolk Nelson Museum. He will be remembered in Sheringham by those who attended his courses on 'Ruling the Waves' and 'Norwich, a Fine City'.

The venue is St Joseph's Catholic Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham, and the cost is £12.00, (free if on benefit). To enrol please send a cheque, made out to W.E.A Sheringham Branch, to Mrs Jane Idiens, Beaconswood, Roman Camp. West Runton, Cromer, Norfolk. NR27 9ND.
