W.E.A. Sheringham - Popular Art course to be repeated

Margaret Forrester's course for the Spring Term on Renaissance Painting and Sculpture is to run twice a week.  The same lecture will be given on Tuesday afternoons at St Joseph's Catholic Church Hall, and again on Friday afternoons at St Andrew's Methodist Church Hall, both in Cromer Road, Sheringham.  We are doing this to achieve manageable numbers, since past experience suggests the course will be very popular.  Both courses last 10 weeks, and run from 2.30 until 4.00 p.m.  The cost is £35.00 (free if on benefit).  The Tuesday class starts on 10th January and the Friday class on 13th January 2006.

Sheringham Carnival is alive and well! At the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 30th November the Chairman, John Ashton announced that after a very successful Carnival this year they were giving away a record sum of over £9,700.  The beneficiaries are as follows; Age Concern, Sheringham Christmas Lights, Crossroads Care, Excel 2000, 2nd Sheringham Brownies, Ladybird Playgroup, Lobster Potties, REMS, Salvation Army, Sheringham and Beeston Regis Sea Scouts, Sheringham Shantymen, Sheringham Childrens Trust, Sheringham in Bloom, Skateboard Park, St John Ambulance, Stable Door, Yesu, Canaan Christian Centre, Sheringham Evening W.I., East Coast Warriors, Sheringham Preservation Society, St Peters Church, Sheringham Lifeboat Crew Fund, Sheringham Museum Trust.   Carnival Day next year is on Wednesday August 2nd.  Parking has been negotiated using the Splash overflow car park together with the one behind the Sports Association Pavilion.  The Carnival Committee are looking into possibly allowing a market on the car park on Carnival Day.  The Carnival now has a Premises Licence, which will give them the independence they need to organise a carnival in Sheringham.   John Ashton predicted that Sheringham Carnival 2006 would be the best ever, living up to its reputation as the Premier Carnival in North Norfolk.

Dear Editor,

Some time ago a correspondent asked what had become of his beloved old school, at the once attractive Hilbre greenspace, on the crest of Holway Road in Sheringham.  In answer to his enquiry: when the school had to close through lack of support, the land and some adjacent houses came under the control of Tesco.  Some years ago this global organisation requested planning permission for a supermarket and petrol station on the site.  Although local people probably still prefer a supermarket at this location rather than any close to the Cromer Road and Holway Road crossroads, the proposal did not proceed, but Tesco hung on to the land as part of a projected deal with the District Council to relocate our Community Centre there.  Your reader's classrooms were inside one of two similar buildings of unique architectural distinction, the better one of which in Abby Road has now sadly been demolished.  The Hilbre schoolhouse has not yet been pulled down, but has been boarded up and neglected.  It is now described as 'derelict'!  The land on which the school was originally built was given freely by the ladies who owned it, and it is sad to see their charitable contribution to local education end up, like much else, just as a negotiable asset by the money - makers of this greedy and unprincipled world.  The current rumour is that the land has already been sold off to a house - building concern, although it is hardly ideal for that purpose and such developments in the past years would have been seen as a breach of AONB guidance.   What will happen to our Community Centre if Tesco get John Prescott's support to knock down the present building?  But who cares about public amenities if you can get tuppence off a tin of dogmeat?
