LAWSON WAY LIGHTS

The Christmas lights in Lawson Way Sheringham were switched on, on Saturday 3rd December with over one hundred people coming along to see the displays of Santa's snowmen, reindeers, nativity scene, elves and hundreds of brightly coloured lights. Also making an appearance was Santa in his sleigh, Poppyland Brass and Spike the Hedgehog from the North Norfolk road safety unit.  Refreshments were provided by local residents for the visitors and there was a charity box in Lawson Way for donations which raised a fantastic amount of £1,350 on Tuesday 24th January. Cheques for £675 were handed over to Peter Mendham co-ordinator for East Anglian Air Ambulance and Robina Churchyard for Sheringham Childrens Trust by Bernie Wright and Rose Butlin.  I would like to pass on a big thank you from the residents of Lawson Way for their kindness in helping us raise this remarkable amount.
Bill Butlin.

GUILDING IN SHERINGHAM

Sheringham friends of Guiding would like to thank everyone who supported our Music Quiz.  We raised £160 which will be spent on the various Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units in Sheringham throughout the coming year.  We had an unprecedented number of quizes returned this year and several with the same number of correct answers.   The winner was M Mitson , the first correct entry out of the hat.  A big thank you to Betram Watts in Sheringham, who kindly allowed us to sell our quiz in their store and to everyone who sold quizzes at their places of work.
Apologies for the following printing error.
No 61 O H N was duplicated with No 9 O H N O Holy Night
No 43 was printed as D T H W I H It should have been D T K I C.
This error occurred when the data was being transferred between two computers.
To keep all things equal, numbers 61 and 43 have been excluded from the marking.  The quiz has been marked out of 73. Apologies for any undue confusion caused.
Thank you for your support. If anyone whises to support Guiding in Sheringham in any way what so ever please contact Division Commissioner on 01263 514482

READERS LETTER

I am writing in reference to the letter in the Sheringham magazine from the daughter of Edna Joan Fieldman.  I remember Joan, at the children's home on Hooks Hill Road, Sheringham.  She was younger than I was, but had an older sister named Dora. Dora was my best friend at school and she came to tea with my family sometimes.   The children were reasonably happy and very well cared for, but rather strictly brought up I gather.  The first time Dora came to us, our family had to be vetted to ensure we were fit company for her to keep.  After tea my father and I would escort Dora back to the home leaving her in the safe care of the sisters. I remember Sister Emie, Sister Ada and Sister Gertrude quite well.  My last meeting with Dora was in 1936; I left school in December 1935.  We lost contact soon after so I presume Dora had left the home probably found employment away, so I would welcome any news of her.  The children were evacuated in the early part of the war, and the home was taken over by the military as a regimental aid post and sick bay.  Incidentally I worked there as a VAD from 1941 - 1943.  I believe the home was re-opened after the war, but now taken over by Break, which I gather is a holiday home for children with special needs and their caring families.  The daisy days were fun as were the songs, sorry I can't remember all the words.  Others at the home springs to mind, Irene Hillard, Flossie Pavit, Joyce Stevens, Isabel Whiffin where are they now?

READERS LETTER

I have been searching for a web link for a local Cromer Newspaper to try and find a long lost Shipmate of mine from way back in 1959.  So far I have been unsuccessful in obtaining a link.  My friend at the time lived in Cromer and used to have a local paper sent to him aboard our ship.  I remember an article he used to like which I thing was called "Harbut's tales from Dumpton" which was a witty article written in the local dialect.  I am hoping to place an Add with photograph if possible which may fall into his lap.
