READERS LETTER

My name is Marcy Holden, I live in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada.   I am in need of some information and hoping that you may be able to help me.   I am looking for some information on my Mother's Biological Father.  My mother is an only child of a single parent.  My mother (Joan Penner nee Crayford) and Grandmother (Joan Jackman (Crayford) nee Watkins) moved to Canada from England in 1949 when my mother was only two years old.  My mother is now 58 years old.  She was born in December 1947 in Hull.

My grandmother kept my mothers father a secret her whole life for reasons unknown to us.   My grandmother passed away just over a month ago.  When going through my grandmothers things we came across some information about her biological father. Which is why I am seeking your help.

Apparently my grandmother had a relationship with a married man during the war.  As a result of this loving relationship they had my mother.  The mans name was Stanley Maurice Stone. We seem to believe he was a Major in the Military.  He as approx 10 years older then my grandmother she was born in 1917.  He was married and had children (all boys I think).  He appartently owned and operated a hotel in Sheringham called The Dolphin Hotel formely The Station Hotel.  He was the licensee from 1960 - 1970.  We had a letter written to my grandmother on a piece of letterhead from the hotel.

My mother loved my grandmother very much and with respect for her the subject of her father never came up.

If there is any information you might be able to find for me that might be of some help for finding his family that would be greatly appreciated.

WANTED: 1 ANCIENT TEDDY BEAR, 2 POTTIES &....

We are really excited about our Aspects of Childhood exhibition (Victorian to 1970's) in the Gallery of Sheringham Museum. Design plans have been made, repainting and repairs have been completed and the construction of wall cabinets especially to house individual items of our collection is now underway.  These already include christening gowns and baby clothes, a dolls house or two, books and writing from past school days and toys that grandad might have played with to mention but a few! BUT we do need an ancient teddy - say fifty years old - a couple of children's potties, enamel perhaps and china, school hats or caps AND your inspiration in suddenly remembering anything small you have buried at home reminding you of childhood past, your own or your children's or even your grandma's - from Victoria up to the 1970s, remember, to help us build a picture of changing children over the last century.  Give us a ring on 01263 825973 to check when we will be at the Museum and bring them along - we'll be delighted to see you.  Oh and bring favourite baby photos, however old for our Best Baby panel - we'll return these once we've photocopied these if you provide a SAE.  See you at the museum!
JANN AND CHRIS WILDEE.

READERS LETTER

My husband and I have just returned from visiting relatives in Sheringham, we spent a very pleasant two weeks, the weather was reasonable, for this time of year, even tho' there was a bit of snow, we had some lovely long walks with our two dogs, along the cliffs and beaches.  Our only complaint is the amount of dog mess that seems to be along your roads, pavements, on the beaches and along the promenade, why?  Dog owners of Sheringham are very fortunate, the local council have put up several dog waste bins around the area and packs of 200 scented doggy bags, for fast and easy pet waste disposal' are for sale at one of the local shops for only £1.00, or do as we do use old carrier bags, it's not difficult to clear up after your dog.  You often hear the complaint of, 'bloomin dogs, always making a mess'  but at the end of the day it's the owners responsibility to clear up after their pets, why don't they do it, can anybody give me the answer.  I feel so sorry for people who through no fault of their own have to use mobility scooters, they have no choice sometimes but to actually run through the mess, they then have to unfortunately trail this mess through their homes, not at all pleasant.  Isn't it time that people were fined for allowing their pets to foul walkways and beaches?  We notice it's not quite so bad during the summer months, when your town is a lot busier with holidaymakers and their dogs.  Why is this, don't the locals care during the winter months?

So come on the locals of Sheringham, if you love your dog and your town please clear up and make it a pleasant place to visit.  Kind regards and Happy New Year to you all, thanks you also for a very interesting magazine which I enjoy reading when visiting.
