READERS LETTER

Mrs Anne Lawson can certainly be praised and thanked for her concise and informatory article on Miss Ruby Hunt.  I had planned to do a similar report myself, but am afraid it didn’t get accomplished.  Therefore full praise to Anne.   I knew the Hunt family all my life, and they were well liked.  Two brothers, Albert and Walter were sent to Sheringham by their father to set up businesses.  This was in the early days of Sheringham’s development, and one was known as ‘Little Hunt’ the other as ‘Big Hunt’ by the locals.  Both supplying clothing, shoes, shirts etc.  My Mother always dealt with Little Hunt to buy all the necessary clothes for my father and brother.  We could not afford to buy at the other shop nearby.  ‘Big Hunt’ catered for the wealthier people and aristocrats.   It is only in the latter era have the ordinary folk been able to use that.   Albert Hunt and his wife had 2 sons and a daughter Ruby.  One son had an electrical shop.  Ruby always loved painting and in her younger years and would display them in one of the windows.  She held a painting day in her studio in Morris Street.  She very kindly asked me to go along after the sad death of my husband.   It was a great help to me to be with people who loved art in some form.  One very kind person was Elsie Woods, an accomplished water colourist and she was so helpful with her advice.  She had attended the Slade.  We would go out painting in the area.  To me a beginner, it was a wonderful opportunity.  Ruby had a little Yorkshire Terrier who was very wilful and would often have to be rounded up.  She took him wherever she went, the last time was when they had gone to Norwich to paint, he had ‘gotten out of the car.  A search was made for him, but he couldn’t be found.  She returned to Sheringham ,then back to Norwich, only to find he had been run over.  Ruby helped anyone who was keen on art. Thankfully Anne has got down to writing an article about Ruby.  Anne is also thinking of having some kind of a Tribute to Ruby who was a splendid person and some kind of a display that could be for everyone to see.  Ruby lived all her life in Sheringham and belonged to many worthy causes.
