Gardening Tips
Your fortnightly gardening tips for indoors and outdoors |
 |
Potatoes - Buy seed potatoes
and get ready to plant, they should be the size of a hen's egg.
Lawns - Not much to do now, and with the cold, wet weather it is too easy to damage the
grass by walking over it. Try to avoid treading on the turf and lay planks over the grass
if you have to use it as a path for any length of time.
Trees -This is a good time to cut down overgrown shrubs or take awkward branches off
trees. Check the ties and stakes of young newly planted trees and firm or re-tie them if
necessary.
Cyclamen - A good indoor cyclamen should still is flowering. Pull off dead flowers as they
fade by twisting the stem through a complete turn and then giving a sharp tug. Cutting
them, leaves a stump that can rot and quickly spread to the crown of the plant.
Azaleas - Keep plants cool and moist. Once the flowers have faded, put the plants in cool
room, the windowsill in a cool bedroom is ideal.
Houseplants - Keep the leaves of plants clean with a wipe of a damp cloth, or use a
leafshine spray, but do not overdo it as this can block the leaf pores.
Garden Compost - If the soil is too wet to do much else, take the opportunity to turn over
the compost heap, or build a new one. Use the well-rotted compost, and return the
half-rotted material to the heap. If added to the soil it can encourage slugs.
Fruit - Check fruit cage netting, tie-in raspberries and can fruit and check their
supports. Do a soil test ready for the new season.
Sow your seed for alpine plants, Continue to water your poinsettias with tepid water do
not overwater as this turns the lower leaves yellow. |

My Embarrassing Moment
We went to the airport, on one of our many Atlantic crossings, in style by uniformed
chauffeur driven limousine. Checked in luggage and went to the restaurant for breakfast. |
|
 |
In the line up I turned and noticed the people behind smiling but thought nothing of it.
We then proceeded to do the usual round of duty free shops, bookstore etc. and finally
went to the special lounge set up for Wardair passengers for coffee. Getting near
departure time I went to the Ladies and checking on hair and general appearance found a
large hairy roller on the back of my hair.
I stormed out to spouse and asked why he hadn't told me about it. His answer - he never
noticed it. Needless to say I have never let him live it down.
We enjoy the paper.
Name withheld.

We would like someone to volunteer to write our gardening column on a regular basis. A
keen gardener maybe? We do not need huge columns, just a few helpful hints relevant to the
time of year. If you would like to find out more, please give us a call.
