Sheringham Community Paper Dougal's Pet Corner

The place for your pet stories and pictures, let me have them
Well, here we are again and this issue I have received a letter from an old friend.

Dear Dougal and Readers.

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, we had a lovely time. Uncle Kevin has gone away now, to Overstrand, but Mum's sister Juliette is here for Xmas and the New Year. Mum and I have been again to Auntie Molly's; Mum left me there one night, while she went to work. She's 77 years old, poor old thing, but she loves her work.

Anyway, that night I wanted to do a wee, I told Auntie Molly, but she said "Sorry Becky, I'm in a wheelchair, so I can't open the back door, go and ask Uncle Mo," so I went and whined in Uncle Mo's ear "wee." He got up and opened the back door, so I went out.

Next day Mum came by taxi, stayed a little while, and then we went to Norwich in the taxi, where Mum and Juliette had a meal, we then went to her flat, and home by bus the next day.

I will write to you again Dougal when I have more to say. Bye for now.
Becky.

YET MORE FUND RAISING

On Sunday 5th January at The Lobster they continued their fundraising efforts for the RNLI

Over £200.00 was raised in a pint pot on the bar and a further £50.00 was raised on the day.

Brave Tony Webster raised funds by having a sponsored Haircut, Jill White a qualified hairdresser and ex-Landlady of the pub did the dirty deed!

The Lobster also held a fancy dress party on New Years Eve which had an excellent turnout with many local people dressing up. A great night was had by all and the atmosphere was wonderful. Made even better by the free food provided by Alistair.

The raffle on the evening also raised funds for a Local Charity.

'Everyone at the Lobster wishes to thank all who made donations and to Terry Webb for his energetic input at extracting money from people'

Gardens for Birds: 1 Natural food
To be attractive to birds a garden has to provide a few necessities, namely food, shelter and water. This and following articles will look at aspects of all three of these basic bird needs.

A fundamental principle in developing a garden for birds is to use plants that will provide them with food. This food may be eaten directly, as with berries, or the plants may be eaten by insects which themselves become tasty morsels for the birds. The best plants are the so-called native ones that have been in the locality for thousands of years and are part of the local ecosystem. With shrubs it is good to use the species that are found in Norfolk hedgerows, and one of the best of these is the hawthorn.

The hawthorn produces berries that are eagerly devoured by many birds, however, its food value is enhanced by the fact that it hosts a greater variety of insects than any other shrub. Some birds, like warblers, are exclusively insect-eaters, but even seed-eating birds need insects when they have young to feed, since growing chicks need plenty of protein.

Other trees and shrubs with plenty of insects are oak (cut them down to ground level every few years as a coppice, if your garden is too small for a mature tree!), silver birch and goat willow, but don't plant willows near waste or water pipes.

Elder and ivy are good for insects and have berries too; ivy berries ripen late in the year when other food is scarce. Blackbirds go mad for rowan berries and before Christmas, birds compete with humans for the berries of holly, Guelder rose, wild roses, dogwood and crab apple can all be both bearers of bird food, and decorative. Brambles provide good food, but also good shelter, and it is shelter that will be the subject of the next article.
