READER'S LETTER
On Monday 16th December over 100 elderly folk were invited to Sheringham High School to enjoy lunchtime entertainment provided by the pupils and staff. The school band played a selection of old favourites and carols; other pupils performed a series of short comedy sketches and dance routines. Tea and mince pies were served by the pupils who also distributed presents. A relaxed and lighthearted time was had by all. One lady pensioner said, "It is nice to mix with the children, they were very kind".

Special thanks go to Mr Lemon and his colleagues at Dial-a-Ride who assisted so efficiently with transport for the visitors.

WARTIME MEMORIES
Mothers coping alone with rationing of food and clothes. Constant air raids and sleepless nights made one realise the value of a mother although we didn't appreciate this at the time - we'd sit under the stairs during air raids - mother and 4 children (our father was evacuated to Blackpool with his work) Later we were given a " Morrison" Shelter - named after Herbert Morrison a Government Minister) - it was a huge cast iron table and when we were all under this, mesh flaps were pulled down to protect us from glass splinters, I found this very claustrophobic - this table took up the whole of our dining room.  I remember we were without gas after an air raid but always our mother improvised to provide a meal. I never had to complain once.

September 15th 1940 is a date one never forgets. The sky full of German Fighters and yet "The Few" (RAF boys most from out of school) fought odds 9 to 1 against in continuous dog fights to save us all in "The Battle of Britain". Sadly, September 15th passes by barely remembered today and yet it was the Start of the End of a War of Survival! Air raids continued for a further 3 years and then we had the V.1's - nicknamed "doodlebugs" - they were pilotless rockets and when the engines stopped, one had to run for cover. One 4 year old brother lost his speech for 2 years with shock when a Doodlebug landed in our road. A Cub Pack sheltering outside a church were killed by another Doodlebug. Then came the V.2.'s again pilotless rockets but silent - lethal! The Scouts served teas in Underground Stations all night - and sheltered from the raids and slept on the platforms. The Scouts still went to work the next day (as children started work at 14 and 15).

May 8th 1945, the day the war was over in Europe was one of jubilation everywhere. But it wasn't until August 1945 that the Far Eastern War ended. I remember one 6 year old brother trying to eat the first banana with the skin on and I remember going to church to give thanks for Peace with our mother.

I often wonder what V.3.'s and V.4.'s would be like and why do men and women create such lethal weapons to destroy when we live in a beautiful world. A young soldier today told me "they have to go in where Politicians have failed".

Having grown up with a badly war disabled dad and a sadly war disabled brother and seen their sufferings and mother dying young soon after the end of the war, one realises that caring about others is the Act of a Builder and it is carelessness that undermines the structure and our wartime mothers endured 2 wars in their lifetime, so one understood their sadness on Remembrance Sunday and growing to respect the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month and also to say thank you to those who sacrificed for our Peace and were sadly born into wars.

Some more brain teasers for you in this issue. We have made them a bit easier as no-one was able to solve the Golf Ball one.

Give them a go and let us know

Coast to Coast

Train A and train B are crossing the country, from coast to coast, over 3,000 miles of railroad track. Train A is going from east to west at 80 miles per hour, and Train B is going from west to east at 90 miles per hour. Which train will be closer to the west coast when they meet?

New Shoes

One day, two mothers and two daughters went shopping for shoes. Their shopping spree was successful - each bought a pair of shoes, and all together, they had three pairs. How is this possible?

Getting Younger?

In the year 1201, a woman was 35 years old. In the year 1206, the same woman was 30. How is this possible?

Get your thinking caps on and see if you can solve these, let us know and you will be in the draw.
