To: The Editor - @Sheringham

May I be permitted to make a response to your article by 'Vic' in issue 4 concerning the ownership of holiday and investment properties in Sheringham.

I own a number of properties in Sheringham and have, in the past, 'let them out' for around nine months in the year. I live and work in Sheringham and in my opinion such holiday homes make a valuable contribution to the local economy.

Firstly, without the holiday trade, Sheringham would be a dormitory town for commuters. The opportunities for local employment would be minimal and very few of the shops and amenities could survive.

Secondly, if there were no cottages or apartments for holiday makers to rent then visitors actually staying in Sheringham could be cut by half. Now it's true to say that on a sunny day in August the number of day trippers can outnumber those staying in Sheringham ten fold, but not every day or every week in the season is bright and sunny and it's at those times that the business community relies upon the self-catering holidaymaker to support them in restaurants and food shops.

Thirdly, one of Sheringham's greatest assets is its high-street shops. During my years renting holiday cottages one of the great attractions for visitors was to eat in the local pubs and restaurants and to buy good quality local produce. As far as I can see, much of the local population wants to support the London based supermarket chains rather than the Sheringham based butchers, bakers and fishermen.

I do agree with 'Vic' that it is right and proper that holiday home owners should pay a full community tax. I would go further than that and say that as they run a business they should pay a full business rate - I certainly did. I believe that if business rates were applied to all investment properties then Porcha's parents might be persuaded to rent out their investment property to holiday makers thus making a valuable contribution to the local economy.

Yours faithfully
Tony Randall, 11 Whitehall Yard, Sheringham
FREE INTERIOR DESIGN COURSE
As part of a European Union Community project called 'Fellows', in partnership with the College of West Anglia we are able to offer you the chance to study the exciting subject of Interior Design. The part time course, which is completely free of charge, will cover a wide range of subjects relevant to contemporary design. These include colour, the history of style, decorative finishes, paint effects, lighting styles, measuring rooms and drawing plans. Successful candidates will be awarded an OCN qualification in Interior Design.

The course will run during school hours in Sheringham High School Sixth Form Centre on Wednesdays commencing on the 22nd January 2003 until the 12th March 2003. (February 19th is half term, school closed). It will be delivered using a mixture of workshops, discussions and computer-based learning materials. Don't worry if you have no prior knowledge of interior design or computers as everything has been designed for complete beginners. As the European Union's target group for this project is women, unfortunately we cannot offer this course to men. We do however envisage a lot of interest for the course, and spaces will be limited. If you would like to attend the free Interior Design course on the 22nd January 2003, please contact:
