THE PROBLEM CAR
Do you remember the small white car, which appeared on the beach at
Beeston Regis in December 1976 and posed a bit of a problem for North Norfolk District
Council?
The Austin 1100 went over the cliff and dropped about 40 yards and rested on the mud bank
half way down. It was the responsibility of the public health committee of the
district council to dispose of the vehicle but it had to be taken down to beach level and
towed two or three miles to West Runton before it could be brought on to the road and
taken away.
Peter Page, the then deputy chief public health officer worried that it was not in a
position where it could be moved economically. The cost at the time to have it
removed was about £100 and he couldn't justify spending that much of the ratepayers
money. The committee couldn't decide whether to have it towed away or to bury
it on the beach to save money! |

SHERINGHAM EVENING W.I.
The President opened the meeting by thanking members for turning out on
such a bitterly cold evening. She welcomed 1 visitor and 3 new members to the W.I.,
one of whom kindly played the piano for Jerusalem as our pianist was unable to attend.
The introduction of a monthly trading stall was well-received, with most of the
items finding a new home! The Treasurer gave her annual budget and fund raising was
discussed - we expect another busy year, especially having agreed to donate £250 for a
television for use by patients at the new Renal Unit at Cromer Hospital.
A group of members had a pre-view visit to the newly-revamped Cromer Museum, prior to its
opening in March. After the £500,000 work, the building has not lost its cottage
atmosphere, and the Poppyland display has been retained, as has the visitors' favourite
Victorian fisherman's cottage. Members were impressed with the new Geology Gallery and
Education Room and we look forward to visiting the Museum again with our families.
The new W.I. Life magazine to be introduced in 2007 and subsequent rise in subscriptions
was brought to members' attention.
The Speaker this month, Patrick Thompson, former Deputy Controller of the Royal Household,
was most amusing and left members asking for more!!

NORTH NORFOLK HOUSING TRUST
North Norfolk Housing Trust (NNHT) has pledged to spend more than £40
million over the next six years upgrading, improving and maintaining its 4,600 homes in
the north of the county. It will also develop and build another 300 new properties
between now and 2011 to provide further urgently needed housing. The pledge was
announced to coincide with the official transfer to the Trust of all housing stock,
formerly owned by North Norfolk District Council. It follows a majority ballot by
tennants last year in favour of the move.
Improvements will start with immediate effect and in the first year alone some 500
properties in Langham, Binham, Sculthorpe and Walsingham will have new bathrooms or
kitchens, or both installed. This is in addition to an ongoing programme of
replacement doors to homes across the North of the county as well as essential maintenance
and other improvements.
Chairman of NNHT, Jacky Howe, commented: "We are looking forward to fulfilling
our pledge to bring all Trust homes up to the highest possible standard as quickly as
possible. Because we can concentrate exclusively on providing the best possible
services for our tenants we can ensure that our programme begins with immediate affect.
"I am also pleased to announce that we shall be working hard to provide more
new homes where they are needed the most, meeting the needs of families, single people,
the young and the old."
NNHT is an independent not-for-profit organisation set up for the purpose of receiving the
housing stock. The first major benefit is a significant increase in investment into
home improvements while at the same time ensuring that tenants continue to receive similar
rights and rents. As part of the process, all staff who had previously been employed
by the local authority have been transferred to the Trust with no redundancies, with the
added bonus that a further 20 new jobs have been created as part of the transfer.
