READERS LETTER Regarding the Tesco debate, may I throw a few thoughts into the mix.
First of all, when a large employer states that 'we will be creating so many
hundred new jobs', what they actually mean is that most of those jobs will come from jobs
already in existence somewhere else. Secondly, as a relative newcomer to the area,
and having moved from an area that has already been down this 'SuperStore' route, (their
words, not mine!) you don't know how lucky you already are having small independent shops
in the town with friendly staff who have time to smile and be polite - you'll see these
disappear at an alarming rate. Thirdly, as it is almost inevitable that the big boys will
win - they usually do - I would point out that parking free for three hours in the Tesco
car park will save you the £1.80 you would have to pay in the town car park, which you
can then spend in your local shops instead, and that there are free loos in Tescos that
will be open for longer hours than the council ones, and will definitely be warmer in the
Winter. There; I've saved you all money, stopped your botty from freezing, and you
can still use your local shops. Sorted! What's next on the list?
FUTURE4US Futures4US is group of Sheringham-based young people concerned about the
effects of a large Superstore, such as Tesco coming to our town. We are firmly
against the prospect, which will eat away at Sheringham's vitality and character, eat away
at our environment and ultimately eat away at our future. Large Superstores have
already ruined many British towns and turned them into clone-towns. We don't want to
live in such a place and people who want a giant Superstore should bear in mind that our
futures are just as important as their perceived needs, if not more. All these
people who want a large Superstore are thinking of their shopping baskets and not of the
serious issues concerning their children and grandchildren. Large Superstores create
huge, unsustainable amounts of pollution i.e. CO2 in the forms of millions of food miles
and tons of packageing. There can be no doubt that the current habits we have and
the way we are currently living is literally costing the Earth. Superstores do not
subscribe to "buying local" and they are just in it for their own profit.
Local shopping, local suppliers and small user-friendly towns are our and the planet's
future.
