Gardening Tips

Your monthly gardening tips for indoors and outdoors

Planting

• Now's the time to add a splash of colour to your patio with hanging baskets and containers and keep them regularly watered.
• Plant out summer bedding plants such as begonia, lobelia, geraniums, pansies and Busy Lizzies at the end of the month.
• In the veggie garden sow winter Savoy cabbages, beetroot, French beans, runner beans, squash and cucumber seeds into prepared beds.
• By sowing basil, coriander and parsley every fortnight you'll enjoy a rotating crop for delicious summer salads!
Maintenance
• The best defence against pests and diseases is to keep all your plants healthy and growing vigorously. Like humans, if you're healthy you're less likely to get ill!
• Spraying roses every two weeks with a rose spray such as Rose Clear should keep things looking good and healthy. If you do find any leaves with black spot then remove them and destroy them, don't put them on the compost heap.
• Minimise places that may harbour garden diseases by keeping your garden neat and tidy. Be sure to clear all dead leaves and fallen fruit and cut out all weak, damaged and dead growth from your plants.
• Weed diligently, at least once a week. You'll reap the rewards you know!

Embarrassing Stories

Sheringham Community Paper

It was the night before my 18th birthday and my parents had gone out.  I decided to have a relaxing long hot bath when I heard the phone ring downstairs.  Being alone in the house I didn't bother getting dressed.  When I got to the bottom of the stairs, the door burst open and a whole crowd of people yelled, 'SURPRISE!'  My entire family aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins and all my friends were standing there!  I was frozen in a state of shock and embarrassment for what seemed like an eternity.

WOLTERTON HALL MUSICAL THEATRE SUMMER WORKSHOP

Children in Norfolk have no excuse to be bored this summer.  Sheringham Little Theatre has teamed up with one of the UK’s leading Children’s Theatre exponents, ‘PDM Entertainments’ to bring a weeklong ‘drama workshop’ course to Norfolk.

The ‘Magic of the Musicals’ is a 5-day course covering all aspects of Drama, Dance and singing based around classic musicales.  From Grease – to Annie – Music known and loved by all.  This workshop culminates in a Workshop production on the Thursday evening.  This course is for children from 8 to 18 years old. Bev Berridge, Managing Director of PDM Entertainments, explained that ‘This course is a great opportunity for children of any ability to come along and find out just how enjoyable the theatre can be.  It will be hard work, but the emphasis is really on having fun’.  The 5-day course will take place in the beautiful country residence of Lord & Lady Walpole, Wolterton Hall.  This fabulous house is a great setting for a music and drama course and the final performance will take place in the ‘Ballroom’ of this great property.  A unique experience on its own.

This is a course, not just for children who are already involved in the arts, but instead a course for everyone who has an interest in the musical theatre.  Professional teachers will take the children in classes in dance, singing and drama and the expertise of these teachers will only add to the fun and enjoyment for the children.

The course will take place, daily (10am to 4pm), from 13th to the 17th August at Wolterton Hall.  Places are limited and are going quickly.  Please call 01787 370406 for further details.
